Obituary for Sarah Dowdy

Sarah E. Dowdy, 95, died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Southwest Christian Care Hospice Unit in Union City, Georgia.

She was born the daughter of Bert and Sally Taylor on April 26, 1926. She spent her childhood growing up in Fitzgerald, Georgia and took on many of the household duties of supporting a family when her mother, Sally E. (Hunter) Taylor passed away at Sarah's early age of 14. She continued high school while helping maintain a household with her dad and three brothers, Jack, Virgil, and Ernest. Sarah is predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Jim Richard Dowdy, and three brothers. She loved gardening and maintaining her yards and flowers ever so perfectly, as she also did with the immaculate house she kept. Better Homes and Gardens could take pointers from her when it came to decorating or presenting a warm, inviting home. She could cook and sew to perfection. She once visited in Augusta, Georgia to help out after some major surgery for her daughter-in-law. Knowing how much her biscuits were liked, she prepared and cooked over 200 biscuits and stored them in the freezer...biscuits were eaten lovingly for the next six months. Sarah was a very determined lady in whatever she attempted; she was stubborn (in a good way); but, she was also playful, especially with her grandchildren; she was stern but loving; she was frugal and could spot a bargain from a mile away; she was the mainstay and cornerstone of our family! It was not unusual to come home to a completely rearranged house...she wanted her home to shine and if she chose to move a two hundred-plus pound piece of furniture...she moved it by herself! Likewise, she would welcome folks to her home with a home cooked meal and some of the best sock-it-to-me cake or egg custard pies ever tasted.

Sarah is survived by her son, Jimmy P. Dowdy (Spouse: Jacqueline), and her two daughters, Linda Scribner Poole (Spouse: Allen), and Judy A. Nelms (Spouse: Bill). Also, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Paul Dowdy (Spouse: Shanna), Brian Dowdy (Spouse: Roni), Elisa Lowe, Kathy Morrill, Laura Lenox (Spouse: Mark), Erin Quattrochi (Spouse: Austin), and Philip Lenox; and ten great grandchildren, Zach Lowe, Evan Lowe, Madison Dowdy, Aiden Dowdy, Colton Morrill, Grayson Morrill, Gavin Morrill, Jack Lenox, Olivia Dowdy, and Cooper Quattrochi. A visitation will be held from 10 until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22nd at Donehoo-Lewis Funeral Home, 736 South Central Avenue, Hapeville, Georgia 30354. Following the visitation, the funeral service will be held at 11:00 in our chapel, with Minister Randy Worrell officiating. The committal service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Rhine, Georgia. Due to the lengthy drive to the graveside, it is anticipated that primarily immediate family members will attend, but others wishing to attend are welcome. Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home of Eastman assisted the family locally.
