MRS. RACHEL HORTON HOLMES, age 72, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, April 10, 2023, at her residence.

 Graveside services will be held at 10:00AM Wednesday, April 12, at Woodlawn Cemetery, with Mr. Robert Lancaster officiating.

 Rachel was born in Chester, GA, and a 1968 graduate of Dodge County High School. She was a homemaker and manager of the family farm for many years. She also served at the Dodge County Board of Education as a substitute bus driver for 6 years. Mrs. Holmes was a salesperson for Olin Mills Studio for several years at Carriage Inn in Eastman. She was also a secretary for Will A. Burch law firm for 7 years. In 1986, Rachel went to work as a nurse’s aid at Pine Wood Manor and after a short period of time she began working as the Dietary Manager at Pine Wood Manor and received certification in 1988 from Auburn University. She retired in 1998. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and decorating. Rachel was a dedicated wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She was the daughter of the late Cora Lee Boswell Horton and James Amos Horton, and was preceded in death by 6 Sisters, Ruth H. Allen, Martha H. Maddox, Magdalene Horton, Erma Horton, Ruby Horton, Beatrice Horton, 5 Brothers, Isaac Horton, Dude Horton, Preacher Horton, Pete Horton, and Geiger Horton.

 She is survived by Her Husband – Lawton Holmes of Eastman; 2 Daughters – Susan Henry (Byrd) of Hawkinsville and April Holmes Sheffield (Mark) of Eastman; Son – Chris Burch (Donna) of Eastman; 2 Sisters-In-Law – Marlene T. Horton of Cochran and Margaret Robertson (Doug Cooper) of Milledgeville; 2 Brothers-In-Law – David Allen and Herman Maddox both of Eastman; Several Nieces and Nephews.

 The family may be contacted at Holmes residence, 344 Dublin Highway, Eastman, GA, and Mrs. Holmes will lie in state at Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home from 12:00PM-4:00PM Tuesday, April 11, 2023. In addition to flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Kidney Association, kidneyfund.org
