Obituary for Marjorie Goode

MRS. MARJORIE PADGETT GOODE, age 85, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, June 1, 2024 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, June 4, at Southerland Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tim Tanner and Rev. Adam Martin officiating. Interment services will be held at 4:00 PM in Tifton at Tift Memorial Gardens with Rev. Michael Marchant officiating.

Marjorie was born and raised on a farm in Tifton, GA, graduating from Tift County High School in 1956 after marrying the love of her life, Hollis Goode. She went on to earn an associate’s degree in business administration from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, which she applied to her work as a medical administrative assistant and other pursuits, both professional and extracurricular. Children, however, were her true passion. For generations, countless young boys and girls benefited from the tender and unselfish heart of “Miss Margie”, whether directly or through her ongoing support of larger organizations. She thoroughly enjoyed doing for others, and put her considerable skill as a seamstress to work by continually making clothing, baby blankets, and other items for children and adults alike. In service to her church and community, she also volunteered in end-of-life care and in support of bereaved families.

Mrs. Goode lived her life in tireless service to God, her husband and family, and her community, never hesitating to put the needs of others before her own. She taught Sunday School for two- and three-year-olds at New River Baptist Church for most of her life, and was an eager and constant servant to the church community in every capacity imaginable for all of her able years. After moving to Eastman late in life, she became an active member of Plainfield Baptist Church, continuing to offer her time and love in any way that she could. She was a steadfast, dedicated wife and partner to her late husband, as well as a thoroughly dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She displayed unswerving love and devotion to her family, the church, and to every child whose life she found the opportunity to impact through service, generosity, and prayer.

She was the daughter of the late Edith Marjorie Hasty Padgett and Olen Pinkney Padgett, and is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hollis Goode, and Sister, Myra Jean Padgett Lamb. She is survived by her Daughters – Marcia Hill of Cumming, GA and Cheryl Giddens (Randy) of Eastman, GA; five Grandchildren – Matthew Hill (Ace Luke) of Charlotte, NC, Will Giddens (Shannon) of Statesboro, GA, Nathaniel Hill of White Lake, MI, Jenna Bowie (Andrew) of Cumming, GA, and Holly Martin (Adam) of Ranson, WV; Great-Grandchildren – Mazey Giddens, Rozzey Giddens, Charley Kate Martin, Emma Rooks Martin, Michael Hollis Bowie, Danielle Brianne Bowie, and Jax Davis; Sister-in-law and Brothers-in-law – Bonnie Johnston (Benny) of Tifton, GA, Gene Goode of Forsyth, GA, and Frank S. Lamb of Lyman, SC; as well as several Nieces and Nephews.

The family may be contacted at the residence of Randy and Cheryl Giddens, 476 Glyen Hickman Road, Eastman, GA, and will receive friends in Southerland Funeral Chapel, from 12:00 PM–1:00 PM Tuesday, June 4. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Georgia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries, www.georgiachildren.org/.
