Obituary for Jan Loyd

MRS. JAN KELLY LOYD, age 67, of Chauncey, GA, died Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, November 16, at Eastman First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Todd Crosby officiating, with interment in Chauncey City Cemetery.

Jan was born on January 15, 1957, in McRae, GA, and raised in Chauncey, GA. She attended and was a member of Chauncey United Methodist Church in her early years. She was a 1974 graduate of Dodge County High School and married her high school sweetheart, Frankie, in August of 1974. She and Frankie lived in Americus, GA and later for a short time in Valdosta, GA while she attended Georgia Southwestern University, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 1978. She was a loving mother to her three wonderful children and in 1977 the family moved to Eastman, GA where Frankie worked in the family business, Loyd’s Chrysler Plymouth Dodge, and she began her career as a 1st Grade teacher at Eastman Elementary School. She was a beloved teacher and taught many children during her years as an educator. She later taught at South Dodge Elementary School after the schools consolidated.

Jan was a dedicated wife, and a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was affectionately known as “Mammy” to her grandchildren, who she loved dearly. She was a friend to many, a huge Atlanta Braves baseball fan, and always enjoyed watching their games. She loved family trips to the beach, loved reading, and putting together jig saw puzzles. She enjoyed sitting on the porch with her husband relaxing and drinking coffee. She was a former pianist during her years at Chauncey United Methodist Church, while her sister, Kerry, played the organ. Since the late 1970s, she was a member of Eastman First Baptist Church. Most of all, she loved her family and taking care of them, which was one of the greatest joys of her life.

Jan was the daughter of the late Martha Jones Kelly and Ralph Stewart Kelly, Sr. and was preceded in death by her Brother, Ralph Stewart Kelly, Jr., and Mother and Father-in-law, Montine Manning Loyd and James Franklin Loyd, Sr.
