MR. GEORGE W. “BILL” LIGGIN, JR. age 84, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Dublinair Nursing Home in Dublin, GA.
MR. GEORGE W. “BILL” LIGGIN, JR. age 84, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Dublinair Nursing Home in Dublin, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jerry Peele officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Bill was born in Eastman, GA on May 25, 1940. He was an active member and deacon of Eastman First Baptist Church. He graduated in 1958 in the first graduation class at Dodge County High School, where he excelled and lettered in football. He attended Oxford College of Emory University for two years before marrying the love of his life, Myrtle Bush, who was his high school sweetheart. They lived in Macon and Montezuma before moving back to Eastman. Bill worked at Liggin Loan Company during his time in Montezuma and was owner and operator of Eastern Finance Company in Eastman for many years. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Eastman Fire Department and retired at the age of 55. Bill was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who was affectionately known as Grandaddy. He enjoyed spending time and going on trips with his wife and family. They traveled to many places including Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Alaska, and Maine. His favorite vacation place was St. Simons Island, GA. Bill enjoyed golf and tennis, and hosting cookouts for his friends and his home which he called “Peckerwood”. Mr. Liggin was elected two terms on the Eastman City Council and was a member and Past President of the Eastman Lions Club. One year he served as the Grand Marshal for the Eastman Lions Club Christmas parade. He was the son of the late George W. Liggin, Sr. and Sybil Grimsley Liggin. He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Myrtle Bush Liggin, sisters, Suzanne Liggin Carson and Teresa Liggin, and his parents-in-law, Johnnie Mullis Bush and W.H. Bush.
Survivors: Daughter – Dina Liggin Hester (Morris) of Dublin; Son – Reed Liggin (Becky) of Woodstock; 5 Grandchildren – Noah Hester (Rebecca) of Macon, Patrick Hester (Alicia Morales) and Chloe Hester (Chase Crutchfield), both of Dublin, Ridge Liggin and Rubin Liggin, both of Woodstock; Sister-in-law – Elaine Bush Murray (Wayne) of Macon; Brother-in-law – Wilson H. Bush (Gail) of Jackson, GA; Nieces and Nephews – Nicole McCormack (Rob), Melissa Borland (John), Beth Stanfield (Cliff), and Bryan Bush (Jennifer), Joe Carson (Sue), and Ed Carson (Stacy).
The family may be contacted at the residence of Dina and Morris Hester, 312 Cypress Pointe, Dublin, GA 31021 and will receive friends in Southerland Funeral Chapel from 2:00PM-3:00PM Tuesday, January 28, before services. In addition to flowers, the family request contributions to the Eastman First Baptist Church building fund, 5107 Oak Street, Eastman, GA 31023.
