MR. GARLON EUGENE “GENE” ROGERS, age 85, of Chauncey, GA, went to his home in Heaven on Monday, June 24, 2024.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, June 26, at Antioch #2 Baptist Church, with Rev. Jack Lee officiating, with interment in Antioch #2 Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family in Antioch #2 Baptist Church from 10:00AM-11:00AM Wednesday, June 26.
Gene was born in Manassas, GA to the late Garlon Charlie Rogers and Evelyn Rushing Rogers. He grew up and worked hard on the Rogers family farm, and his Rogers family and the farm always held a special place in his heart. He graduated from Reidsville High School in 1957 and served in the Air National Guard. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA, and continued his education at the University of Georgia, where he earned a master’s degree in forestry. He began his career with the UGA Extension Service in training in Ware County. From there, he worked in Wayne County, as an Associate County Agent in Chatham County, as a County Agent in Montgomery County, and retired as the County Extension Director of Dodge County after 30 years of Extension Service. He enjoyed working with farmers and the 4-H program. He was a member and past President of the Eastman Rotary Club. He was honored to be selected Farmer of the Year in 2020 by the Rotary Club for his contributions to agriculture in the county.
Gene was a member and Deacon of Antioch #2 Baptist Church in Milan, GA. He was a teacher for the Men’s Sunday School Class for several years. He was a quiet man of faith, a man of his word, a man of high moral character, and a hard worker. He enjoyed hunting, was a sharp shooter, loved the outdoors, and was dedicated to his family and church.
Members of Gene’s beloved family who preceded him in death are his parents and brothers, Neil Rogers and Lawrence Rogers.
Gene is survived by his Wife of 43 years – Wanda Cadwell Rogers of Chauncey, GA; Sons – Garlon Reed Rogers (Kim) of Dothan, AL and Jay Eckles (Tiffany) of Chauncey, GA; Grandchildren – Caroline Rogers, Benjamin Jones, Tanner Eckles, and Emma Eckles; Brothers – Jimmy Rogers (Henri Etta) of Bellville, GA and Wayne Rogers (Kim) of Watkinsville, GA; Sister – Faye Rogers Kemp (Harold) of Claxton, GA; Sisters-in-law – Paula Kelly Rogers of Eastman, GA, Libby Parker Rogers of Reidsville, GA, and Carliss Cadwell Dollar (Van) of Dublin, GA; Brother-in-law – Charles Williams (Cindi) of Chauncey, GA; Many beloved nieces, nephews, and several cousins also survive.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Donald Selph and his staff, the Dodge County Hospital staff, the Fairview Park Hospital staff, the Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation staff, and the Affinis Hospice staff for the excellent health care they provided during Gene’s illness.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial gifts may be made to Antioch #2 Baptist Church, 180 Antioch South Road, Milan, GA 31060, or to the Dodge County 4-H Program, 230 Foster Street #A, Eastman, GA 31023.
