MR. EUGENE “GENE” CARR, age 91, of Bogart, GA, died Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, GA.
MR. EUGENE “GENE” CARR, age 91, of Bogart, GA, died Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, November 6, at Stokes-Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Brad Ball officiating, with interment in Rogers Cemetery in the Yonkers Community of Dodge County.
Gene was born in Chester, GA on April 18, 1933. He was of the Christian Faith and attended Emanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, GA, a graduate of Chester High School in 1950, and attended Middle Georgia College. He married in the early 1950s and was blessed with four sons, David, Dennis, Steve, and Stan. He earned his Master of Science in Agriculture Economics degree from the University of Georgia in June of 1965. In 1963-1976 during his college years, he worked for the Farmers Home Administration in the Department of Agriculture. He was headquartered in Athens, GA and later at offices in Sylvester and Waynesboro. In 1970, he worked in banking for the Bank of Waynesboro, where he worked until 1976 before returning to the Farmers Home Administration. He moved briefly to Cochran, GA in the late 1970s before returning to Athens. Gene retired in the mid-1990s as a State Director, after a storied career with the Farmers Home Administration.
He served as a Lt. Colonel in the United States Army Reserves before retiring April 18, 1993, after twenty-five years of faithful service. From 1997-2001, he served as Executive Vice President of B & I Lending, LLC in Atlanta, GA and was a commercial lending consultant for several years for Thomas Financial in Atlanta, GA. He was a member of many civic organizations over his life including, Waynesboro Masonic Lodge #274 and earned his 50 years pin and was a Grand Lodge of Georgia Emeritus, and a member of the Rotary Club and Jaycees in Waynesboro, GA.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and was a friend to many. He was always there for his family and enjoyed golf, politics, Georgia Bulldogs football, hunting, fishing, gardening, grilling, cooking, and reading. Gene was the son of the late Mary Jane Taylor Carr and Jimmy Carr and was preceded in death by his Son, Steve Carr, Stepdaughter, Rhonda Bird Beasley, and his Siblings, Ruby Carr Rogers, Yvonne Carr Davis, Jeanette Carr Durand, Roger Carr, Dorothy Carr Myers, Winifred Carr Floyd, Rosalyn Carr Shepard, and Ida Lou Carr Parrish.
He is survived by his Wife – Jean Bird Carr of Bogart, GA; Sons – David Carr (Kathy), Dennis Carr (Cheryl), both of Suwanee, GA, and Stan Carr (Angie) of Dublin, GA; Stepson – Kelly Bird (Teresa) of Commerce, GA; 7 Grandchildren – Katie Davidson, John Carr (Mary Rose), Will Carr (Frankie), Charlie Carr (Betsy), Abby Carr, Griffin Carr (Brittany), and Regan McShane (Ryan); 6 Step-Grandchildren – Savannah Bird, Ford Bird, Whitney Lombardi, Lauren Beasley, Jake Holder (Amber Allen), and Anna Charlovich (Justin); 14 Great-Grandchildren; Sister – Elizabeth Carr Laney; Numerous Nieces and Nephews.
The family will receive friends in Stokes-Southerland Funeral Chapel from 1:00PM-2:00PM prior to services.
