Obituary for Ellen Marie Davis Rowland

On Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the age of 89, Marie took the healing hand of her redeemer, Jesus Christ, and reunited with her devoted, loving husband of 64 years, James McKee Rowland, her “Jim”.

Born October 3, 1931 in Nashville, Tenn. to Walter Wilson Davis and Elizabeth Meadows Davis, Marie was raised in Miami, Florida with her brother, Dale, and sister, Dollie Mae. It was there, in Miami, that she met Jim Rowland from Dexter, GA on a blind date. Upon marrying in 1952, Jim & Marie moved to Pontiac, Michigan and raised four children while operating their Landscaping and Paving business. During the cold Michigan winters, Jim and Marie developed Hitchiti Mobile Home Park in Dexter, GA where they made their second home.

Ms. Marie became well-known as the “Tomato Lady” in Waterford Michigan, as she sold “Georgia Grown Tomatoes” every summer for over 20 years. Her loyal customers eagerly awaited the arrival of her “Famous Green Pickup Truck”.

In 1995, they retired full time and permanently moved to Hitchiti in Dexter, where together they enjoyed their grandchildren, traveled, and hosted their life-long “Northern Snowbird” friends as they passed through Georgia.

Marie was a member of Bowling’s “600 Club”, a talented seamstress, enjoyed intricate needlework, and was a Sports Aficionado! Marie could tell you Players names & stats in every sport. You would most always find her “coaching” or cheering the TV tuned to a sports broadcast. Whether it be Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Football, Bowling, Basketball, Hockey, Pro or College, she enjoyed them all. As a Mom & Grandmother, Marie passed down her infectious love of sports and was their faithful supportive Fan from the grandstands, sidelines, and Theater seats.

Feeling blessed to have had such a loving, caring, involved role model for a mother, are her children, Jeff & Colleen Rowland of Waterford MI., Cynda & Stanley Darnell of Dexter, Tracy & Cindy Rowland of Dudley, and Don & Jean Rowland of Dexter. “Meme/Grandma” will be dearly missed by her 6 grandchildren, Jay, Kelli, Kason, Micah, Cody, Jessi, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Marie’s greatest Legacy is found in how she lived her daily life, following God’s command to LOVE one another and showing appreciation for every kindness. And to all of those who crossed her path, God’s grace & love were truly shown.

Her family grieved privately, and a Celebration of Life will be at a later date. Guest book condolences can be made at www.stokes-southerland.com.
