May 16, 2013, at his residence.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, May 18, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Arnold Rye officiating.
Mr. Simmons was a native of Dodge County, a 27 year retired employee of Lithonia Lighting and an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church and was a tool & die worker. He was preceded in death by his Father - John F. “Duke” Simmons.

MR. JOHN COX “J.C.” ECKLES, age 85, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Thursday, May 16, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele officiating with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Eckles was a native of Dodge County, a 1944 graduate of Eastman High School, attended Georgia Military College for 2 years and then joined the U.S. Army serving in WWII and Korea. He served as a Congressional Page in Washington, DC in 1942. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eastman where he sang in the choir for over 45 years and served as secretary of the Max O’Neal Sunday School Class. Mr. Eckles was a 41 year retired salesman with The Coca-Cola Company. He was the son of the late Ethel Doster Eckles and G.L. Eckles, Sr. He was preceded in death by a Sister – Christine Eckles Coleman and 3 Brothers – G.L. Eckles, Jr., B.J. “Jack” Eckles, Sr., and Abner Eckles.

MR. MARTIN KELLY SMITH, age 65, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, April 26, 2013, at Dodge County Hospital.

Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member and deacon of Eastside Baptist Church and a retired electronics tech for Warner Robins AFB. He was son of the late Minnie Sheffield Smith & Talmadge Kelly Smith and was preceded in death by an Infant Son – Martin Smith.

MR. W.D. DAVIS, age 80, of Chauncey, GA, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Davis was a native of Dodge County and a member and Deacon of Zion Hope Baptist Church. He was retired from Husqvarna and also a retired farmer. He was the son of the late Lillie Mae Dykes Davis and John Henry Davis. He was preceded in death by his Wife – Helen McCranie Davis; 2 Sisters – Lizzie Mae Powell and Viola Freund; 2 Brothers – Eugene Davis and John Henry Davis, Jr.

Mrs. Reaves was born in Telfair County, an active member of Rhine Baptist Church, a WMU Director, and Sunday School teacher. She was employed many years in the lunchroom of Rhine Elementary and Dodge County Middle School. She was the daughter of the late Eudell Wynn Reaves and George M. Reaves. She was preceded in death by her Husband – William D. “Sonny” Reaves; 2 Sisters – Bessie Lee Hilliard and Mary Etta Hobbs; 3 Brothers – Monroe Reaves, Mason Reaves, and Walter Reaves.

J. Briggs Family Practice in McRae. She was the daughter of the late Willie Whitehead Hilliard & Jesse James Hilliard. She was preceded in death by her Husband – Samuel “Sambo” Yawn; Son – Marty Tomberlin; Sister –Marjorie Stuckey; Granddaughter – Lindsey Tomberlin.

Mrs. Hilliard, born in Hazlehurst, GA was a member of Rhine Baptist Church. In the early years of her life she completed a course in cosmetology in Atlanta, GA and later decided to stay home and dedicate the remainder of her life to her family. She resided in Arlington, VA from 1964-1968 and returned to Rhine in the early 1970s. She was one of three that formed the Rhine Ladies Club in the early 1980s. She was the daughter of the late Mary Etta Hall Swain and James Madison Swain. She was preceded in death by her Husband –Carey W. Hilliard; 7 Sisters – Nina Sellers, Ethyl Farmer, Mae Floyd, Inez McDonald, Carrie Hall, Irma Martin, and Ruby Swain; Brother – Warren Swain, Sr.

He was son of the late Willie Emma Moore Shepherd & Gordon Paul Shepherd and widower of Dora Lee Edge Shepherd. He was preceded in death by a Son – Craig D. MR. WILLIAM FRANKLIN (BILL) LEWIS, age 94, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Serenity Hospice in Dublin.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, March 23, at First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Anne Gibbons officiating, with interment in Garden of Memories, Tampa, FL.
Mr. Lewis was born in Talladega, Alabama, February 13, 1919. He grew up in Columbus, Georgia and entered the US Army Air Corp in 1940. He served a tour in Alaska prior to the US entry into WWII. During WWII he served in the 8th Air Force in England and flew 57 missions in B-17s. His medals included a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He later participated in the Berlin Airlift and was assigned to MacDill AFB, in Tampa, Florida. He retired in 1960 and started a second career as a certified Landscape Architect, Agronomist, and Environmental Engineer. During part of this career he served as the head of Roads and Grounds at MacDill AFB where his specialties were golf course design and turf grass.
For the past 17 years he resided in Eastman, Georgia, after living in Tampa since 1950. Mr. Lewis was a long time member of the Tampa Primitive Baptist Church and later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Eastman. He was son of the late Lennie Vickers Lewis & Frank Burton Lewis and was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Mary Nell Brannen Lewis.
Survivors: 1 Daughter – Robynn Holland (Steve) of Locust Grove, GA; 3 Sons – Roger Lewis (Becky) of Valrico, FL, Randall Lewis (Kathy) of Eastman, and Phillip Lewis (Vicki) of Rhine; 8 Grandchildren; 11 Great-Grandchildren.

Mrs. Hambrick-Paul was born in Dodge County, of the Baptist faith, and was a 20 year retired paraprofessional at Winship Magnet Elementary School in Macon. She enjoyed her time at Pine Gate Retirement Community and was well known as Mama Hambrick from her years at the Bibb Skating Rink. She was daughter of the late Missie Lee Wright and James Bertrue Wright.

Mr. Daniels was born in Dodge County, of the Baptist faith, and was a member of Cottondale Baptist Church. He was son of the late Johnnie Bracewell Daniel and Aubrey “Perk” Daniel.

Rev. Robinson was born in Atlanta, GA and served as a Baptist Minister for the past 40 years. He was Pastor of Fair Haven Baptist Church for 26 years, Owner & Operator of Charles Robinson Insurance Agency since 1972, past President of the Eastman Lions Club and past President of the Heart Association of Dodge County. He attended Middle Georgia College on a basketball scholarship and received his degree in Theology at Mercer University in 1976. He was the son of the late Agnes Treadaway Robinson and Lloyd Chester Robinson.

Mr. Kuni was a member of Antioch #1 Baptist Church, a 23 year retired veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He was retired from Roydon Ware Inc. and was the son of the late Eleanor Diehl Kuni and Robert Otto Kuni. He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Joyce Kuni, a Granddaughter Tamara Kuni and a Grandson Donald Irvin Kuni.

S. in Home Economics from Berry College and achieved her Masters Degree from Georgia State College. She worked as an Elementary School Teacher in Sandy Springs, GA for 3 years. She served as the Home Demonstration agent for Bleckley County before becoming the statewide representative. She served as a Lifeline representative for Dodge County and was a member & former president of the Eastman Pilot Club.
She was daughter of the late Fannie Mae Evans Harrell & Irby Harrell and widow of Allen D. Johnson. She was preceded in death by 2 Sisters- Juanelle H. Parkerson and Mary Edna Cornett and 1 Brother- Jack Harrell.

After retiring from the state patrol he served in the U. S. Marshall Service for several years and was a member of the Georgia Peace Officers Association. He was a loyal member of the “Quickie” Restaurant Afternoon Bunch. He was the son of the late Aileen Drew Cravey & John Studstill Cravey and was preceded in death by his wife, of 54 years, Myrtice Barron Cravey.

Mrs. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of First Baptist Church and the Hope Sunday School Class and a retired LPN for Dr. Harold W. Long. She was daughter of the late Sallie Sheffield Howard & William Henry Howard and widow of Harrell Rogers. She was preceded in death by a Son – Harrell Lynn Rogers and Sister – Nannie Mae Giddens.

MRS. SELAH SANDERS JESSUP, age 89, passed away on December 26, 2012, due to complications with pneumonia. Selah was born July 24, 1923 in Hawkinsville, GA to Gladys and Samuel Sanders.
Selah graduated from Dodge County High School in 1941. She attended Nursing School in Atlanta, GA. While in Atlanta, Selah and Milton Jessup, also from Eastman, GA, were married. Selah worked as a registered nurse in Atlanta until Milton graduated from Georgia Tech, subsequently moving to Birmingham, AL. In Birmingham, Selah worked as a RN at Baptist Montclair Hospital for 25 years, raising three children as well. She and Milton were married for 63 years until Milton’s passing in 2010. Selah then resided at The Village Assisted Living Home for two years.
Selah enjoyed reading, collecting over 3000 novels. She loved working crossword puzzles and playing scrabble to keep her mind alert. She was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed her weekly bowling team competitions. Some of her happiest moments were spent at the beach with her family. Selah was a member of the First Baptist Church of Birmingham.
Selah will be remembered with love by her family and friends. She is survived by her: Daughter – Julia Welch (Scott); 2 Sons – Mayor of Riverside, AL – Michael “Rusty” Jessup (Sandra) and Francis M. “Buddy” Jessup (Susan); 5 Grandchildren – Daniel Welch, Joshua Welch (Bethany), Owens Jessup, Francis M. “Rusty” Jessup, IV and Kate Jessup; 1 Great-Grandchild – Harper Welch; Several Nieces and Nephews. Her husband, Dr. Francis M. Jessup, Jr., her parents and her Brother – Thomas Sanders preceded her in death.

Mr. Broome was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, a former Chatham County Police & DEA Task Force Agent and was currently an employee of United Stone, Eastman.
During his first year of service with the Chatham County Police, he was awarded the Medal of Valor (2000). In 2001 he was awarded the Police Shield. He was Law Enforcement Officer of the Year (2004-2005), received the DEA Savannah Resident Office Outstanding Accomplishment Award (2006-2010), DEA Task Force outstanding contribution to the success of Operation Krackjack (2010) and Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team Certificate of Appreciation Award (2004 & 2005).

Mr. Pruett was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of El Bethel Baptist Church, a 1951 Graduate of Chauncey High School, achieved his Ford Mechanic Certification from Clarksville, GA and was a retired mechanic for the Dodge County Bus Shop. He was son of the late Alice Pitts Pruett & Robert Morrison Pruett and was preceded in death by a Brother-in-Law – Hubert Daughtry.

Mrs. Jessup was a member of Grace Baptist Church and formerly an active member of Lovely Grove Baptist Church. She was a Director and Banking Officer of Magnolia Bankshares Inc. and the Bank of Eastman. She was the first female Bank Director in Dodge County, a former Hospital Authority Board Member, past member of Eastman-Dodge County Chamber of Commerce, former Board Member of the Senior Citizens Center and a board of directors member for the Relay of Life.
Mrs. Jessup was 1946 graduate of Eastman High School and a graduate of Crandelle Business College. She received the 1974-1975 Dodge County Unit of the American Cancer Society Appreciation Award, the 1976 American Cancer Society Georgia Division Citation for Excellance and the 1993 Dodge County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award.
She was daughter of the late Joe Annie Mullis Barnett Moore & Rema Lou Barnett and widow of John F. Jessup, Jr. She was preceded in death by 4 Brothers – Rudolph Barnett, Albert Barnett, Sr., J. C. Barnett & Grady Ross Barnett and Special Friend – Clinton Kight.

MS. STUART ANNE STUCKEY, age 52, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, December 7, 2012 at her residence.

Stuart was born in Atlanta but her home and heart were in Eastman. She attended St. Mark Catholic Church. As a devoted mother and homemaker, she was most happy with her sons and a house full of her friends. A founding member of the Dodge Arts Guild, she was instrumental in the restoration of the Magnolia Theater. She devoted her time to gourmet cooking, catering and caring for her beloved cats and dogs. Her home and heart were always open to all and she was happiest when she was helping others.
She was the daughter of W. S. Stuckey, Jr. (Ethelyn) of Washington, DC, and the late Anne Armstead Stuckey Elliott of Augusta. Her paternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Stuckey of Eastman and her maternal grandparents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Austin Armstead.
In addition to her father and step-mother, she is survived by her Sons - James Austin Putnam and Williamson E. Putnam, both of Eastman; Step-Father - Herbert Elliott (Carson) of Augusta; Sisters - Corinne Elliott of Jackson, WY, Adrienne Eischeid of Mount Pleasant, SC and Stephanie Stuckey-Benefield (Robert) of Decatur; Brothers - W. He was a retired textile supervisor for the Eastman Cotton Mill, son of the late Eudell Branan Bracewell & James Echols Bracewell and was preceded in death by his first Wife of 42 years and the mother of his sons – Hylah Walker Bracewell, Sister – Bertie Bracewell Davis and Brother – Walter Bracewell.

Mrs. Brantley was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She was daughter of the late Jewel Mullis Harrell & George Edward Harrell and widow of Busy B. Brantley. She was preceded in death by a Son – Timothy “Tim” Brantley and 3 Brothers – Edward Harrell, Wendell Harrell and Lesine Harrell.

MR. JOHN THORNTON O’BARR, JR., age 84, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, December 3, 2012, at Dodge County Hospital.

Mr. O’Barr was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, a veteran of the U. S. Army, a retired heavy equipment operator for Thompson Hardwood, Hazlehurst, GA and an avid fisherman. He was son of the late Sara Harrell O’Barr & John T. O’Barr, Sr. and widower of Sadie Selph O’Barr. He was preceded in death by a Brother – Bill O’Barr.

Ms. Taylor was a member of Milan Baptist Church, a retired candy packer for Standard Candy Company and a loving second mother to her family. MRS. JANIE VENECIA GRIMES PEACOCK, age 84, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 at Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 2:00PM Monday, November 26, at Solid Rock Church of God, with Rev. Tim Hicks and Rev. Greg Lowery officiating, with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Peacock was a native of Dodge County, attended Solid Rock Church of God, a retired civil service employee of Warner Robins AFB, daughter of the late Lantie Clark Grimes & Rev. L. H. Grimes and widow of J. Herman Peacock. Mrs. Peacock was passionate about taking care of others. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining and gardening. She was preceded in death by a Sister – Christine Lowery and Brother – Edgar Grimes.

MRS. JOYCE BOWEN JONES, age 81, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at her residence in Milan, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, November 23, at Antioch #2 Baptist Church, with Rev. Jack Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch #2 Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones was born in Rhine, daughter of the late Rosa Kate & Tom Pete Bowen. She was preceded in death by her Husband - John Robert Charlton Jones, Jr., Sister – Barbara Faye Brown, Brother – Harry “Bubba” Bowen and Son-in-Law – Warren E. Southerland, Jr. She was a member of Antioch #2 Baptist Church of Milan and served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Mrs. Jones began teaching at age eighteen after completing three years of college in two years. She received her B. S. degree in education from Georgia State College, a Masters Degree and the Sixth Year Specialist in Education Degree from the University of Georgia with a Major in School Media Services.
She was a member of the Eastman Pilot Club for 22 years, the Dodge County & State of Georgia Retired Teachers Association and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Beta Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi. In addition she earned her Director of Libraries, Instructional Supervision and School Administration certifications. Mrs. Jones was a dedicated Educator for 38 years in the Dodge County community teaching at every level except First and Second Grade. She served as Librarian of Dodge County High School in Eastman, GA for nine years and Assistant Principal at Dodge County High School for four years. She also served as Principal at Rhine Elementary and Chauncey Elementary. Mrs. Jones retired from the Dodge County School System in June of 1988. She continued to serve eight years as an Educator at the Women’s State Prison and Men’s State Prison in Milan after retiring from her full time teaching career. Her life was richly blessed through the years in working with so many students, teachers and administrators.
Mrs. Jones is survived by 2 Daughters – Rhonda Jones Dwozan (Freddie) of Milan and Joy Jones Southerland of Eastman; 6 Grandchildren – Joni D. Coleman (Tracy), Marci D. McCranie (Brian), Krista D. Rainey (Chip), Wes Southerland, Wil Southerland (Brandy) and Gant Southerland (Susan); 11 Great-Grandchildren – Josie, Olivia, Tanner, Laura Kate, Madie, Jensen, Joyanna, Alek, Caroline, Sydney and Briana; Brother-in-Law – James E. “Jim” Brown of Milan; 4 Sisters-in-Law – Claudia H. Poole of Ocean Shores, WA, Jackye J. Fuller of Newnan, Martha J. Kelly (Stewart) of Chauncey and Willene J. Swinson (Jim) of Cochran; Aunts – Jean Kennedy (Gordon) and Zada Edwards (Jim) both of Albany; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

Ms. Burnham was a member of Rhine Methodist Church, a retired Paraprofessional for the Dodge County School System, a former secretary for OEMC and daughter of the late Jewell Stowe Bryan & Augustus B. Bryan. She was preceded in death by a Former Husband – Edwin Burnham, Infant Daughter – Lindsey Selene Burnham, Step-Daughter – Tawana Burnham, 2 Sisters – Shirley Hicks & Betty Black and a Brother – Bobby Wood.

Warren was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church and Owner & Operator of Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home. He was a member of the Eastman Lions Club, Georgia Funeral Directors Association and Member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Trust. He was preceded in death by his Father - Warren E. Southerland, Sr.
