MR. ARTHUR H. GRIMSLEY
1921 - April, 18, 2014

MR. ARTHUR HENRY GRIMSLEY, age 92, of St. Marys, GA, passed away Friday, April, 18, 2014 at Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus. He left this world peacefully as he was surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, April 21, at First United Methodist Church of Eastman, with Rev. Dale Thornton officiating, with interment in Giddens-Harrell Cemetery.

Mr. Grimsley was born and raised in Telfair County. He moved to St. Marys, GA in 1950 where he was a member of St. Marys United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men. He was a leader in 4-H and Boys Scouts. He was employed by Gilman Paper Company. After his retirement in 1982, he resided in Eastman, GA where he was a member of First United Methodist Church, was an active member of the DCH65, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He returned to St. Marys in 2003 and maintained dual residences in both cities until his death. He was an avid fisherman, master gardener, loved to sing, and enjoyed being around people.

He was the son of the late Mamie Shaw Grimsley and Arthur T. Grimsley. He was preceded in death by his infant son and Wife – Zelma L. Woodard Grimsley; 5 Sisters – Mary Helen Strayer, Madge Huff, Laura Conyers, Maude Bowen, and Betty Jackson; 2 Brothers – James Grimsley and Henry Grimsley.

Survivors: Daughter – Gwen G. Drury (Mike) of St. Marys, GA; 2 Sons – John A. Grimsley (Daphyne) of Alexandria, VA and David H. Grimsley of St. Marys, GA; Brother – Charlie Grimsley (Nell) of Helena; 6 Grandchildren – Patrick Drury (Amanda), Matthew Drury, Genii Grimsley, Ami Arnold Chancellor-Phillips, Logan Bradford (Alec), and Matt McSwain; 4 Great-Grandchildren – Brody and Reagan Drury, Alara and Derrick Schroyer; 2 Sisters-In-Law – Grace Jean Grimsley and Berta Coursey; 3 Brothers-In-Law – Edmond Woodard (Yoshiko), James Woodard, and Johnzelle Woodard (Sheila); Numerous Nieces & Nephews.

LINDA ADAMS
1947 - April, 18, 2014

MRS. LINDA ANN SHEFFIELD ADAMS, age 66, of Milan, GA, died Friday, April, 18, 2014 at Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, April 21, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Roy Woods officiating, with interment in Milan City Cemetery.

Mrs. Adams was a native of Telfair County, a member of Mt. Ararat Freewill Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was daughter of the late Evelyn Sheffield Howell & James Sheffield, widow of Roston Mac “Big A” Adams and was preceded in death by a Brother – Mike Sheffield and Step-Father – Emmis Howell.

Survivors: Daughter – Rhonda Ussery (Craig) of Milan; Son – Tim Adams (Renee) of Eastman; 4 Grandchildren – Deanna Ussery, Allee Ussery, Makayla Adams and Ben Adams; Brother – Gary Sheffield (Connie) of Eastman; Sister – Debbie Griffin (Billy) of Eastman; Aunt – Estelle Gibson of Waycross; 2 Sisters-in-Law – Patricia “Tater” Williams (Dewey Blizzard) and Barbara Adams; 3 Brothers-in-Law – Paul Adams, James Evans and Ron Keeling; Beloved Baby – Peanut; Several Nieces and Nephews.

1931 - April 16, 2014

MS. MELBA LUCILLE RICKS, age 82, of Eastman, GA, formerly of Starke, FL, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, April 18, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Ralph Smith officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ms. Ricks was a member of Eastman Bible Baptist Church, a homemaker and enjoyed her church and embroidering. She was daughter of the late Ada Carter Ricks & James David Ricks, Sr. and was preceded in death by 2 Sisters – Thelma Mae Johnson & Ruby J. Griffis and 4 Brothers – Joseph C. Ricks, James David Ricks, Jr., George W. Ricks, Sr. & Leo Allen Ricks.

Survivors: 2 Sisters – Daisy Mae Smith (Rev. Ralph) of Eastman and Dorothy D. Yasinosky (George) of California; 3 Brothers – Jesse J. MRS. MARTHA JONES KELLY
1921 - April 12, 2014

MRS. MARTHA MOZELLE JONES KELLY, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2014, at her home in Chauncey, Ga., surrounded by family. A native of Milan, Ga., and a lifelong resident of Dodge County, she was the first of nine children of Sarah Martha Hardy and John Robert Charlton Jones, born Nov. 8, 1921. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings Jayne Evelyn Jones, John Robert Charlton Jones, Jr., Betty Jones Taylor, Kindell C. Jones, Windell C. Jones, and Wilburn C. Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, April 14, at Southerland Funeral Chapel with Rev. Royce Vaughn and Rev. Graton Helms officiating, with interment in Chauncey City Cemetery.

Martha graduated from Milan High School with honors at the age of 15, class of 1937. She graduated from Middle Georgia College in 1939 and from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga., now Georgia College and State University, in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English and French, and with a minor in Library Science. Later that year, she married Ralph Stewart Kelly, Sr. on Nov. 16, 1941 in Cochran, Ga.

Martha’s energetic, productive life was one focused on her family, service to her church, and marked by a passion for education and teaching. In addition to raising her family (and tirelessly helping to raise her large, extended family), Martha was a member of Chauncey Methodist Church for 72 years, where she taught Sunday School for nearly 66 years, and previously was a member at Antioch Baptist Church in Milan.

She taught in the Dodge County School System for more than 30 years, first at Milan High School, then Eastman Elementary, and finally at Chauncey Elementary. Over her career as an educator, she taught English, French, and reading, and served as Librarian in Chauncey for many years. She was also an avid gardener, who loved to keep a beautiful yard full of flowers and green plants, a fact noticed each spring by many passing by her home on the Golden Isles Highway.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph Stewart Kelly, Sr., and seven children: Saralyn Kelly Entrekin (Marshall) of Eatonton, Ga.; Ralph Stewart Kelly, Jr. (Gloria) of Dublin, Ga.; John Caswell Kelly, Sr. (Linda) of Chauncey; Brinda Kelly Stanley of Chauncey; Linda Kelly Covington (Melton) of Thomasville, Ga.; Kerry Kelly Graham (Wayne) of Chauncey; and Jan Kelly Loyd (Frankie) of Eastman, Ga. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren: Stephen L. Shepherd (Joan), Candace M. Swilley (Gary), Brian K. Shepherd, Heather J. Shepherd, Chad S. Kelly (Robin), Dane H. Kelly (Robin), Karla K. Reid (Sammy); Stephanie K. Drake (Tim), John C. Kelly, Jr. (Chrisa), Jess B. Kelly (Beth), Kim S. Peterson (Petey), Jill S. Studstill (Mark), Jodi S. Brewer (Travis), Jason E. Stanley (Lara), Shannon C. Hortman (Ken), Russ M. Covington (Christy), Shea C. McDougald (Erik), Jordan C. Taylor (Jacob), Kennon W. Graham (Brooke), Kelly G. Gray (Kirby), Jamie Loyd, Jana L. Owen (Josh), and Jenica L. Sheffield (Jamie). She is also survived by 50 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, sisters Willene Jones Swinson (Jim) of Cochran, Ga. and Jackye Jones Fuller of Marietta, Ga., brother-in-law, Robert Kelly, 7 sisters-in-law, Katurah Kelly, Louise Kelly, Mollie Sue Parkerson, Janet Wade, Joyce Bland, Lois Meadors and Elizabeth Minter, Caregiver, Lillian Stansberry and many nieces and nephews.

MARIAH DIX
1928 - April 2, 2014

MRS. MARIAH WILLIAMSON DIX, age 85, of Rhine, GA, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, April 4, at Hopewell Baptist Church, with Mr. Bobby Ryals, Rev. Ben Waller and Rev. Roswell Chapman officiating, with interment in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Dix was a life long resident of Dodge County, a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where she served as an Adult Sunday School teacher for over 30 years, a graduate of Rhine High School, a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. She was daughter of the late Nita Floyd Williamson & George Ben Williamson, widow of Dan Dix and was preceded in death by a Sister – Joyce Blackmon and Brother – Horace Williamson.

Survivors: Daughter – Donna Walker (Jerrel) of Rhine; 3 Sisters – Georgia Mae Law of Rhine, Iris Morris and Kay Lowery (Gary) both of Eastman; Sister-in-Law – Shirley Dix of Rhine; Several Nieces and Nephews.

L. CLAYTON PARKERSON
1920 - March 30, 2014

MR. LESLIE CLAYTON PARKERSON, age 93, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, March 31, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Pastors Ronnie & Donna Barron officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Parkerson was a native of Dodge County, member and Deacon of First Baptist Church, and member of the Baracca Sunday School Class. He was a retired U S Postal Service Rural Letter Carrier, a U S Navy WWII Veteran, and an avid fisherman. He earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Georgia and was the son of the late Jennie Keen Parkerson and Willis Parkerson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Aleen Reaves Parkerson.

Survivors: 2 Sons – Dr. James Parkerson (Cherry) and Jerry Parkerson (Janice) both of Eastman; 3 Grandchildren – Julie Howell (Mark), Michael Parkerson (Lauren), and Dr. Jancy Parkerson; 5 Great-Grandchildren – Timothy Parkerson, Grant Parkerson, Dylan Howell, Aaron Howell, and Delaney Howell.

DUANE M. MOTTERN
1978 - March 28, 2014

MR. DUANE MARTIN MOTTERN, age 36, of Eastman, GA, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, at Fairview Park Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, March 31, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Mr. Quint Bush officiating.

Mr. Mottern was born in Langley, VA and was of the Baptist Faith. He was an educator with the Dodge County Board of Education where he was the chorus director, taught audio, video, and film classes, and assisted in literary competitions. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Georgia Southern University, his Masters degree in Educational Technology from the University of South Florida, and was pursuing his Doctoral Degree in Administrative Education from Liberty University. He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandmother – Virginia Orr and Paternal Grandparents – M. Clay and Glenna Mottern.

MR. WILLIE “BO” FRANK BRYANT, SR., age 65, of Eastman, GA, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Serenity Place in Dublin.

Mr. Bryant was a native of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith, and was employed by Bearden Oil Company and Shorty’s Car Wash for over 30 years. He was a Veteran of the U S Army and enjoyed attending classic car shows. He was the son of the late Angielue Tripp Bryant and Frank Wilbur Bryant. He was preceded in death by his sister Lois Jean Joiner.

MR. RALIEGH C. STONECYPHER, age 92, of Eastman, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, March 28, at Stonecypher – Rape Cemetery, with Rev. Terron Stonecypher officiating.

Mr. Stonecypher was of the Baptist Faith, a Veteran of the US Army where he served in WWII and The Battle of Bulge, and was a retired truck driver with J & M Trucking. He was a farmer, furniture salesman, roofing supervisor, and pulpwood business Owner & Operator. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW and was the son of the late Lillie Bell Buice Stonecypher and Charles Edgar Stonecypher. He was preceded in death by 4 Sisters – Wynelle Gibbs, Karalle Walker, Mardele McWhorter, and Minnie Smith; 2 Brothers – Robert Stonecypher and Roger Stonecypher.

MRS. BETTY ROGERS BOUTWELL, age 76, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Boutwell was a native of Dodge County, member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, and member of the Ladies Sunday School class and W.M.U. She was a retired sales clerk of B.C. Moore’s & Son and loved cooking, sewing, and her family. She was the daughter of the late Bessie Mae Bacon Rogers and James Luther Rogers, Sr. She was preceded in death by 2 Sons – Charles David Boutwell & Bobby Ray Boutwell; Brother – James L. Rogers, Jr.; Sister – Joyce Rogers.

MRS. ALMA SMITH STAPLETON, age 86, of Chester, GA, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Dodge County Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith, an ordained Minister, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed listening to music and was the daughter of the late Johnnie Clyde Hall Scarboro and Fred Scarboro. She was preceded in death by her Husbands – J.B. Allen, Marvin Stapleton, & Henry Smith; Sister – Edna Holmes; Brother – Kenneth Scarboro; Grandson – Travis Allen; Son-In-Law – Paul Reising.

1913 - March 16, 2014

MR. HENRY LAWRENCE BUIE, age 100, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Tuesday, March 18, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Jack Lee officiating, with interment in Plainfield Cemetery with Rev. Brian Martin officiating.

Mr. Buie was the oldest member of First Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U S Army where he served in WWII, and was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service. He was the Owner & Operator of Buie Distributing and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was the son of the late Jonnie Province Buie and William C. Buie. He was preceded in death by his Sister – Thelma Roberts and 4 Brothers – Jake Buie, W.C. Buie, Jack Buie, and Robert Buie.

MR. LIN CARROL PEACOCK, age 66, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.

Mr. Peacock was a native of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith, a veteran of the U S Navy, and retired from the Coast Guard. He enjoyed swimming and crossword puzzles. He was the son of the late Lynette Hooks Peacock and Luther Shaw Peacock and was preceded in death by his brother Larry Peacock.

MRS. BERTHA MAE MARTIN BASS, age 89, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Dodge County Hospital.

She was daughter of the late Odell Darsey Martin & George E. She was the daughter of late Ammie Foster Moore and Samuel Moore. She was preceded in death by her Husband – Edward “Brother” Dykes; Grandson – Toby Smith; 3 Sisters – Annie Pearl Crumley, Drucilla Selph, and Irene Ussery; 3 Brothers – Travis Moore, Clayton Moore, and Henry Moore.

MR. CHARLES RAYFORD STRICKLAND, SR., age 74, of Chester, GA, died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, March 1, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Craig Minor officiating, with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

Mr. Strickland was a native of Dodge County, member of First Baptist Church, and member of the Chapel Sunday School class. He was a 15 year retired Finance Officer for Laurens County and 25 year former Director of Auditing for Stuckey’s, Inc. His Christian services included serving as a former member of First Free Will Baptist Church as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and Clerk of the District Association. He was an active Gideon for many years speaking at churches and distributing Bibles. He was also a volunteer of Eastman-Dodge County Council on Aging – Senior Citizens Center and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Strickland was the son of the late Eudora Huff Cummins and Gus Strickland and Valley Kate S. Holland and Walter J. Holland. He was preceded in death by his Sister – Dorothy H. Massingill; Brother – Eddie Cummins; 4 Brother-In-Laws – Jack Massingill, Buddy Cannington, Pete Davis, and Tommy Veal.

Survivors: Wife of 52 years – Jackie B. Strickland of Chester; 2 Sons – Charles R. “Chuck” Strickland, Jr. (Erica) of Cochran and Kevin R. Stickland (April) of Eastman; 4 Sisters – Jenelle H. MR. WILLIAM RUSSELL “BILL” LOWERY, JR., age 71, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00PM Thursday, February 27, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Paul Cowles officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Lowery was born on February 14, 1943 to Miriam Chambers Lowery and William Russell Lowery, Sr. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the morning Ushers. He was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Dodge County High School and Middle Georgia College. He owned and operated Coleman Gifts and Framing for over 50 years. He was a member of the Dodge-Eastman Chamber of Commerce, where he served of the Board of Directors and a member of Colony Bank Board of Directors. He received a Vocational Achievement Award for his outstanding achievement in the workplace and community in 2001 and the Small Business of the Year Award in 2011. He was an avid fan of both baseball and softball where he served as a member of the Dodge County High School Baseball and Softball Boosters.

Survivors: Wife – Judy G. Lowery of Eastman; 2 Daughters – Camille L. Taylor (Wayne) and Claudia L. Mrs. Andrews was born in Richmond, VA, a former member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, and former resident of Eastman for over 20 years. She enjoyed babysitting, fishing, and cooking. She was the daughter of the late Viola Vaughn Hare and Hobart Sheridan Hare. She was preceded in death by her Husband – Oakley “Andy” Andrews and Sister – Marjorie Lewis.

1928 - February 20, 2014

MR. JOHN W. “JACK” STUCKEY, age 86, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Mobley officiating, with interment in Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery, Dexter, GA.

He was born on January 29, 1928 in Rhine, GA to parents John and Dora Belle Hardy Stuckey. Mr. Stuckey served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army Air Corps. He had worked as a Maintenance Supervisor and had lived in the local Green Cove Springs, FL area since 1963, coming from Dublin, GA. He was a Shriner and member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. Mr. Stuckey was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Hardy and Gene Stuckey and his sister, Anna Bell Stuckey Douglas.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bonnie F. Stuckey; sons, Skeeter and Timothy Stuckey; daughters, Patricia Furstenberg (Joe) and Jackie Stuckey; brothers, Oscar Stuckey and Talmadge Stuckey (Reva); sister, Emmie Douglass (Willie); grandchildren, Spencer Furstenberg (Jennie), Sarah Furstenberg (Greg Toth) and Jennine Midkiff (Josh) and great-grandchildren, Nichole Geary, Joshua Geary, Logan Geary and Mabry Furstenberg.

Mrs. Knight, born in Pulaski County, was a member of First Baptist Church, and an Operation Christmas Child volunteer who attended several mission trips to Russia and Africa. She was a Registered Nurse at Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville, GA and former nurse at Serenity Hospice.

MRS. KELLI PRUETT ERWIN, age 43, of Eastman, GA, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, February 15, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele officiating, with interment in El Bethel Cemetery, Chauncey.

Mrs. Erwin was a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, graduate of University of Georgia College of Pharmacy with a BS. Ph. degree, and was employed by numerous pharmacies. She was passionate about her ability to help senior patients within her profession and she enjoyed reading, knitting, Christian music and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her Brother – Mickey Pruett.

MRS. MILDRED RYALS CONLEY, age 89, of Rhine, GA, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Sunday, February 16, at Rhine Baptist Church, with Rev. Ricky Gilmore and Mr. Bobby Ryals officiating, with interment in Bay Springs Cemetery with Rev. John Mobley and Mr. Gary Ryals officiating.

Mrs. Conley was born and raised in Rhine, GA Dodge County, oldest member of Rhine Baptist Church, and member of the Rhine Baptist Church Ladies Sunday School Class and WMU. She was the 2008 Grand Marshal of the Rhine Pondtown parade and retired seamstress and quality control coordinator for Happ Manufacturing of Macon. She was the daughter of the late Essie Ryals Boney and George L. Ryals, Sr. She was preceded in death by her Husband – John H. Conley; Brother – George L. Ryals, Jr.; Brother-In-Law – Hall W. Thompson, Sr.; Great-Granddaughter – Tiffany Reeves; Great Great-Granddaughter – Malorie Hughes.

MRS. ERNESTINE TAYLOR JONES, age 81, of Milan, GA, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Dodge County, member of Milan Baptist Church, former paraprofessional at Milan Elementary School and secretary at Telfair County Sheriff’s office. She was a homemaker who enjoyed painting, clogging, sewing, doll making, and gardening. She was a former member of the Milan Booster Club and was the daughter of the late Pearl NeSmith Taylor and Elmo Taylor. She was preceded in death by her Siblings – Lorene Taylor, Christine Taylor, Clyde Taylor, James “Bunch” Taylor, Harry Taylor, and Buddy Taylor.

MR. ROBERT LEE EVANS, age 82, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, February 7, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Daniel Cook officiating, with interment in Giddens-Harrell Cemetery.

Mr. Evans was a native of Dodge County, a veteran of the U. S. Army, and served in the Korean War. He was a retired barber, member of Cottondale Baptist Church, son of the late Sarah Elizabeth Holland Evans and Issac Wesley Evans, and was preceded in death by several siblings.

MR. CLIFFORD GARY DYKES, age 78, of Rhine, GA, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at his sister’s residence, in Rhine, GA.

Mr. Dykes was a native of Dodge County and member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired carpenter, enjoyed hunting arrowheads and working on old cars. He was son of the late Sallie Bowen Dykes & John Royal Dykes and was preceded in death by his Siblings - Opal Statham, Mary Hilliard, Nadine Cooper, Merle Dykes, and George Dykes.

She was the daughter of the late Louise Iler Waters and Rufus Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband William “Willie” Connell.

Mr. Sanford was born in Atlanta, GA, of the Baptist faith, and retired from Lithonia Lighting-Cochran. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors and was the son of the late Margaret Williams Sanford and Howard Calvin “Sam” Sanford.

MR. JOHN DOPSON ROGERS, age 82, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, January 17, 2014 in the Dodge County Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00PM Sunday, January 19, at Harrell Cemetery, with Dr. Rick Mitchell officiating.

Mr. Rogers was a native of Dodge County, a member of First United Methodist Church, and a 42 year retired senior mechanic in electronics from WRAFB. He was a member of the Eastman Masonic Lodge and was the son of the late Ida Norton Dopson Rogers and James Cullen “Jim” Rogers. He was preceded in death by his Sister – Mary Louise Cannington and 2 Brothers – Lovette Alexander “L.A.” Rogers and Robert Norton “Bob” Rogers.

He was son of the late Sara Parkerson Williams & Samuel Sylvester Williams and was preceded in death by a Sister – Gina Williams Cook, Brother – Eddie Williams, and Mother-in-Law – Eulala Clarke Bowen.

MR. WILLIAM WILLARD “BILL” TAYLOR, age 75, of Eastman, died Friday, January 3, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Taylor was born in Atlanta, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church and son of the late Maude Butler Taylor & Willard Wesley Taylor. He was a 1955 high school graduate of Georgia Military Academy and a 1959 graduate of The Citadel, with his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was former owner & operator of Taylor & Son Egg Company, of Plainfield, former Congressional Aide and pilot for Congressman Bill Stuckey, a retired civil service employee of Robins Air Force Base and a master wood worker.

MR. FOWELL HILL “DICK” MENDENHALL, age 79, of Athens died Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Mendenhall was born in Burlington, NC, a Veteran of the US Army, member of Gaissert Methodist Church, and had a distinguished career in radio and television broadcasting that began as a Sports and Production Director at WGAU Radio in Athens, GA. He was retired as a Public Relations Manager, for Bell Telephone Company of Philadelphia, PA, member of the 1996 Athens Olympic Committee, and member of Athens Chamber of Commerce. His work experience included TV Editorialist with WSB Atlanta and WFIL Philadelphia, Athens WGAU Radio Talk Show Host and Co-Host with Barbara Dooly, and weekly columnist for the Athens Banner Herald. He was the son of the late Susie West Mendenhall and Fowell Hill Mendenhall, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Carolyn Hussey Mendenhall.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Grabel Germany, a member of Cottondale Baptist Church, a former employee of the Belt Factory, Goody’s Inc, C & J Manufacturing and of Robins Air Force Base. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking cakes and was an avid volunteer of church activities. She was daughter of the late Eugenie Schwanke Schneider & Rudolph Cornrod Schneider and widow of William H. Lewis. She was preceded in death by 1 Sister – Irmgard Kreft, 3 Brothers – Helmut Schneider, Rudi Schneider and Gerhard Schneider and a companion of over 20 years – William Frank Harrell.

CINDY SPENCER
1929 - December 21, 2013

Cindy Spencer, born Carlieze Wilbanks, died on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the age of 84. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery with a private family gathering in Eastman, Georgia.

She was born in Eastman, Georgia, the daughter of John T. Wilbanks and Annie Wilbanks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge R. Thomas Spencer, Sr., and by her grandson Scott Spencer. Survivors include her sister, Jan Fountain, four sons--Tom, John, Bill, and Kelly--three daughters-in-law--Pam, Cheryl, and Carolyn--five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Cindy was a natural-born teacher and a tireless advocate for the disabled. She loved family above all and considered almost everyone as her children. In retirement she was a volunteer church organist and choir director, an avid reader and lover of crossword puzzles, and her grand obsession was cooking for family and guests.

She was founder and director of The Houston Speech and Hearing School, which for over twenty-five years educated children with hearing impairments, delayed language, learning disabilities, and multiple handicaps. She also worked with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Central Georgia as its director, as vice president of its Board of Trustees, as an instructor of Family-to-Family courses, and as founder of Plantasia/Seeds of Hope Gardens.

After earning her bachelor's degree from Mercer University, she taught at several schools: Sacred Heart in Warner Robins, St. Joseph's and Mount DeSales in Macon, St. Michael's on Tybee Island, Eastman Elementary, Preparatory High School in Brunswick, and Loudonville Elementary in New York.

In 1968 in Warner Robins, she was selected as both Woman of the Year and Homemaker of the Year.

He was a Veteran of the U S Army and the son of the late Annie Wilkerson Sheffield and Arter Sheffield. He was preceded in death by his Wife – Ethel P. DR. ROBUCK BURCH, JR.
1939 - December 13, 2013

DR. LUCIUS ROBUCK BURCH, JR., age 74, of Eastman, GA, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 in his home near Eastman, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Monday, December 16, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Buck Burch and Dr. Jarrett Burch officiating, with interment in Robuck Burch Family Cemetery, with Rev. Jack Lee and Dr. Billy Lee officiating.

Dr. Burch, the son of Robuck, Sr. and Mary H. Burch, served as pastor of 19 churches over 53 years, with six churches being in Dodge County. He was educated at Mercer University, Southwestern Seminary, New Orleans Seminary, and the University of South Africa. He served as Bible Professor at Brewton-Parker College, Tift College, and Luther Rice Seminary for eighteen years. Calvary Baptist Church was his last church, founded as a new church.

His hobbies included planting trees and flowers, playing with his grandchildren, and discussing the Bible. He led his life as a prophet, whose whole allegiance was God’s Word. His last words had Jesus on them and he left this world knowing that his heritage knew the Savior.

He was a retired civil service employee of Robins Air Force Base, Mayor of Cadwell, GA, member of the Cadwell Volunteer Fire Department and son of the late Lorene Curtis Dowdy & John A. Dowdy. He was preceded in death by a Sister – Lana Dowdy Hudson.

Shepard (Steve) of Dublin; Grandson – Braxton Charles Shepard of Dublin; 2 Sisters – Joan Joiner (Billy) and Nise Woodard (Ronnie) both of Eastman; 2 Brothers – Bill Dowdy of Sylvester, GA and Wilcox Dowdy (Jay) of Phoenix, AZ; 2 Aunts – Rebecca Brosheck of Charlottesville, VA and Jean Bass of Cochran; Mother-in-Law – Bobbie Thomas of Cadwell; Several Nieces, Nephews & Cousins.

1952 - January 10, 2012

MR. WARREN EDWARD SOUTHERLAND, JR., Age 59, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00PM Friday, January 13 from the graveside in Orphans Cemetery, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Charles Robinson officiating.

Warren was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church and Owner & Operator of Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home. He was a member of the Eastman Lions Club, Georgia Funeral Directors Association and Member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Trust. He was preceded in death by his Father - Warren E. Southerland, Sr.

Survivors: Wife – Joy Jones Southerland; 3 Sons – Warren E. “Wes” Southerland III, Wil C. Southerland (Brandy) & Gant W. Southerland (Susan); 3 Grandchildren – Caroline Southerland, Sydney Southerland & Briana Southerland; Mother – Pearl Belflower Southerland; Sister – Ann S. Peacock (James); Mother-in-Law – Joyce B. Jones; Sister-in-Law – Rhonda Dwozan (Freddie); Aunt – Berta Mae Belflower Wright; 6 Nieces – Shelli Goodman (Tony), Abby Peacock, Tracy Harrell, Joni Coleman (Tracy), Marci McCranie (Brian), Krista Rainey (Chip) and Several Cousins.
