1929 - December 12, 2014

MR. BARNEY JEROME “COOT” SAPP, age 85, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, December 12, 2014 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00PM Monday, December 15, at Woodlawn Cemetery, with Rev. Tim Brown officiating.

Mr. Sapp was a native of Dodge County, a member, Sunday school teacher and former deacon of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and the founder, former owner & operator of Dixie Cleaners. He was an avid cattle farmer, son of the late Bertie Gulley Sapp & Jodie A. Sapp and was preceded in death by a Son – Karon Sapp, Brother – Joseph A. “Pete” Sapp and Brother-in-Law – Lewis K. Darling.

Survivors: 3 Sons – Dean Sapp (Ann), Hank Sapp (Angel) and Casey Sapp (Sarah) all of Eastman; Daughter – Tammy Sapp of Cape Coral, FL; Companion – Vickie Moore of Eastman; 10 Grandchildren – Jason Sapp, Lesa Yawn (David), Jody Sapp, Brittany Sapp (Will), Hannah Sapp, Madison Sapp, Nicole Sapp, Britney Hall, Brent Hall and Kaylee Sapp; 8 Great Grandchildren – Cam Sapp, Cade Sapp, Cason Sapp, Malory Yawn, Hunter Yawn, Will Westbrook, Brett Durden and Brooklyn Durden; Sister – Elise Lee Darling of Macon; Sister-in-Law – Mary L. ROY ROCK
1922 - December 11, 2014

MR. CLARENCE ROY ROCK, age 92, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2:00PM Sunday, December 14, at Antioch #1 Cemetery, Gresston, with Rev. Fred Parker officiating.

Mr. Rock was born in Stettler, Canada, of the Lutheran Faith and a retired building contractor and land developer. He became a United States citizen in 1947, was president of Rock Construction Company in Detroit, MI and was son of the late Matilda Sebach Rock & Charles Rock. He was preceded in death by his Wife of 64 years – Edith Glass Rock, Daughter – Sara Jane Robertson, 3 Sisters and 2 Brothers.

Survivors: Wife – Carolyn Frost Rock of Eastman; 2 Sons – William Alford Rock of Blairsville and Ronald Roy Rock of Belize; Step-Daughter – Sheila Holt (Walter) of Savannah; Step-Son – Jimmy Frost of Eastman; 15 Grandchildren; 8 Great-Grandchildren; 1 Great-Great-Grandchild; Several Nieces and Nephews.

WYLENE BOWEN
1936 - December 10, 2014

MRS. WYLENE PEARL BURNHAM BOWEN, age 78, of Abbeville, GA, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Regency Healthcare in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, December 13, at First Baptist Church of Abbeville, with Rev. Tony Dixon officiating, with interment in Bay Springs Cemetery, Rhine.

Mrs. Bowen was born in Eastman, GA, a member of First Baptist Church of Abbeville and a homemaker. She was a 1953 graduate of Rhine High School, was a great cook and a loving mother and grandmother, and enjoyed fishing with her husband. She was daughter of the late Viola Fincher Burnham Pace & Tom Burnham and was preceded in death by a Brother – James Edwin Burnham.

Survivors: Husband of over 60 years – Laurie A. Bowen of Abbeville; Daughter – Sharon McDonald of Albany; Son – Mike Bowen (Cindy) of Abbeville; 4 Grandchildren – Brett Bowen, Melissa Hillhouse, Hope Bowen and Ellie McDonald; 5 Great-Grandchildren – Knox, Raegan, Kaylee, Karli and Kaigen; 3 Sisters-in-Law – Bitsy Jones (Tommy), Janette Lann and Linda Collins; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

JESSICA RAE MULLIS, age 30, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, December 7, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Mr. David Yawn and Rev. Myron Parkerson, with interment in New Bethel Cemetery.

Jessica was born in Perry, GA and was of the Baptist Faith. She was a former student of Dodge County High School and attended Oconee Fall Line Technical College after receiving her GED. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, enjoyed arts and crafts and had a love for animals.

MR. W. GARY PEACOCK, age 69, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, December 10, at Lovely Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Chuck Yzenski and Dr. Donnie Sutton officiating, with interment in Lovely Grove Church Cemetery.

Mr. Peacock was a resident of Dodge County, a member and deacon of Lovely Grove Baptist Church and a member of Gideons International for over 15 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Dodge County High School, founder and CEO of Acme Business Products and an avid cattle farmer. He was son of the late Ruby Scarborough Peacock & Joe Peacock and was preceded in death by a Brother – Burke Peacock.

Survivors: Wife of 47 years – Linda Stanley Peacock of Eastman; Daughter – Tracey Clark (Charles) of Ball Ground, GA; Son – Jeff Peacock (Lisa) of Athens; 4 Grandchildren – Emma Clark, Sophie Clark, Will Peacock and Jake Peacock; Sister – Sue Habicht of Lawrenceville; Brother – Sam Peacock (Carole) of Canton, GA; Many Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. WILLENE LITTLE CANNINGTON, age 75, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, December 4, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Cannington was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Fair Haven Baptist Church, a homemaker, a former clerk for APAC Construction Company and a loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was daughter of the late Ola Brown Little & Jim David Little and was preceded in death by 2 Brothers – David Little and Eddie Little, Sr.

Angie was born in McRae, GA, a member of Lovely Grove Baptist Church, a 1991 graduate of Telfair County High School, a homemaker, a former receptionist for Dr. Lou Barker and a loving wife and mother to her family. She was daughter of the late Joyce Burnam Spires and Wayne Gerald Spires and was preceded in death by a Brother – Lee Spires.

JAMES PITTMAN
1953 - December 1, 2014

MR. JAMES ROBERT PITTMAN, age 61, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Thursday, December 4, at Eastman First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Rick Mitchell and Dr. Jerry Peele officiating, with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

James was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a 1971 graduate of Dodge County High School, a member of Eastman First United Methodist Church and owner & operator of A Touch of Class Florist for over 27 years. He was a Georgia Master Florist, received the National American Floral Association Award and was the Georgia Florist 1983 Designer of the Year. He was the 1989 Georgia State Retailer of the Year, member of the Eastman Garden Club, a Georgia Master 4-Her, member and past president of the Georgia State Florist Association, Charter Member of the Eastman Alliance and served on the Eastman Downtown Development Authority. He was a family man and a friend to everyone, and a firm believer to never give up.

Survivors: Mother – Eva Marie Rogers Pittman of Eastman; Father – R.L. MR. VERLIN GAY, age 58, of Gresston, GA, died November 29, 2014, at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Monday, December 1, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Mack Johnson and Sister Margaret Arthur officiating, with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Gay was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith and owner and operator of KGB Towing. He was a former mechanic for the Dodge County Road Department, a former employee of Graphic Packaging and enjoyed hunting, fishing and restoring automobiles. He was son of the late Minnie Lee Singletary Gay & Newbern Gay, Sr. and was preceded in death by a Sister – Pauline Brown and 3 Brothers – Newbern Gay, Jr., William Gay and Earl Gay.

MRS. MARY JEAN ALLIGOOD McDANIEL, age 69, of Fitzgerald, GA, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at her residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, December 2, in Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Chris Dotson and Mr. Frank Alligood officiating.

Mrs. McDaniel was born in Dodge County and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She enjoyed gardening and tending her flowers and was daughter of the late Martha Fountain Alligood and Julius James Alligood. Mary was preceded in death by her Husband- Johnnie B. McDaniel; 3 Sons- Julius “Butch” McDaniel, Gerald “Jerry” McDaniel; Sister- Clementene Alligood Devine.

MRS. DEBRA WHITE GRAY, age 59, of Chauncey, GA, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Serenity Place, in Dublin.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, November 28, in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Rhine, with Rev. Graton Helms and Mr. Brian Hargrove officiating.

Mrs. Gray was born in Dodge County and of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother and Nana to her family and a 27 year retired Educator for the Dodge, Bibb and Houston County School Systems. She was daughter of the late Ruby McCranie Hargrove and C. H. “Pete” White.

Survivors: 2 Daughters- Hilary Kelly of Chauncey and Holly Gray of Roddy; Son- Robert Kelly (Chandler) of Chauncey; Brother- Jimmy White (Connie) of Macon; 2 Grandchildren- Logan Kelly and Deja Profitt both of Cochran; Several Aunts and Cousins.

MAJ. JIM SWINSON, SR., RETIRED
1924 - November 19, 2014

MAJ. JIM I. SWINSON, SR., RETIRED, age 90, of Cochran, GA, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at his residence.

Military graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, November 22, at Antioch #2 Cemetery, Milan, with Mr. Freddie Dwozan and Mr. Jones Swinson officiating.

Mr. Swinson was of the Baptist faith, a native of Telfair County, and a 26 year retired Major with the U.S. Air Force, having served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a B-24 pilot and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, a member of the Air Force Association and an avid golfer. He was son of the late Fonnie Stanley Swinson & Henry M. Swinson. Of good spirits and great cheer, he enjoyed encouraging his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His courage and confidence are legendary. Those near him in his final days were privileged to witness endearing examples of how a man and his sweetheart wife of 70 years ought to live together in love.

Survivors: Wife – Willene Jones Swinson of Cochran; Daughter – Kenya Sarten of Milan; 3 Sons – Jim I. REV. JOHNNY FRED SCARBORO, age 77, of Chester, GA, died Sunday, November 16, 2014 at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, November 22, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Hancock officiating, with interment in Pleasant Olive Cemetery.

Rev. Scarboro was a member of Home Missionaries and Evangelist of America, Inc., a truck driver and owner and operator of J & R Enterprises for over 16 years. He was a tent and radio evangelist for over 40 years, an avid outdoorsman, son of the late Johnnie Clyde Hall Sanders & Fred Scarboro and was preceded in death by a Son – Johnny Edward Scarboro and 3 Siblings – Alma Smith Stapleton, Edna Holmes and Kenneth Scarboro.

Survivors: Wife of 48 years – Rose Whinery Scarboro of Chester; 2 Daughters – Kimberly Koch (Daniel) of Eastman and Malissa S. Hancock (John) of Swainsboro; Son – Chris Jackson (Velda) of Chester; 9 Grandchildren – Sierra Hancock, Matthew Hancock, Thomas Hancock, Madison Hancock, Tiffany Beck, Jonathan Beck, Gage Jackson, Gregory Jackson and Alyssa Jackson; Numerous Nieces, Nephews and Cousins including a Niece – Beulah Wheeler of Chester.

MRS. SYLVIA HILLIARD ROGERS, age 78, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, November 14, 2014 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday, November 18, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jarrett Burch and Dr. Jerry Peele officiating, with interment in Harrell-Rogers Cemetery, Eastman.

Mrs. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a Christian with Faith in the Lord Jesus. She was a member of Fair Haven Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school for many years. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was daughter of the late Sylvester Hilliard and Katherine Yancey Hilliard and widow of the late Lloyd Rogers.

Survivors: Son – Shane Rogers (Donna) of Eastman; Daughter – Patricia R. Underwood (Terry) of Eastman; 3 Grandchildren – Jessica Robinson (Brad), Bethany Underwood and Lydia Underwood; 2 Great-Grandchildren – Holli Robinson and Holden Robinson; Brother– Edward C. BO BRADHAM

RICHARD ELLIOTT “BO” BRADHAM, JR., age 29, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, Macon.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Friday, November 14, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Daniel Folds and Rev. Brian Jones officiating, with interment in Zebulon Cemetery.

Bo was born in Brunswick, GA, a member of Zebulon Baptist Church, a member of the Eastman Volunteer Fire Department, and a production controller for Robins AFB. He was a 2003 graduate of Dodge County High School and a 2004 graduate of Georgia Aviation and Technical College. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and enjoyed 4 wheeling and mud bogging, and was a true family man and friend to all. He was preceded in death by a Grandfather – E.F. Bradham and Uncle – Charlie Boyett.

MRS. LOLA MAE ROLAND REVEL, age 84, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, November 10, 2014 at Dublinair Nursing Home, Dublin, GA.

Mrs. Revel was a native of Laurens County, of the Baptist Faith, a retired LPN for the Dodge County Hospital and was a loving mother and grandmother. CHRISTOPHER DAVID “CHRIS” COURSEY, age 28, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, November 9, 2014.

He was affectionately known as “Coursey” to his family and friends. Chris was a member of Ocmulgee Baptist Church, a graduate of Dodge County High School and Middle Georgia Aviation College. He was a sheet metal worker for Robins AFB, a fireman and first responder for Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department, and enjoyed 4 wheeling, mud bogging, hunting and guns. MR. LUTHER GRAHAM TAYLOR, age 50, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, November 7, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Taylor was a life long resident of Dodge County, a member of Eastman First Presbyterian Church and a retired machinist for Robins AFB. He attended ABAC, was a 1985 graduate of Heart of Georgia Technical College and enjoyed fishing, his family and being with his friends. He was son of the late William “Bill” Taylor and was preceded in death by his Father-in-Law – Thomas Randall Graham.

MR. C. H. “JIM” JAMIESON, age 92, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, GA.

Mr. Jamieson was a life long resident of Dodge County, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, owner & operator of Jamieson Construction and was a master of pond construction, and built numerous ponds in the area. Earlier is his career, Mr. Jamieson was co owner of Jamieson Brothers Construction with his brother, in road construction and industrial grading. He was a family man and enjoyed using his abilities to help others. He was son of the late Pauline McCranie Jamieson & Charlie Lee Jamieson and was preceded in death by 2 Grandsons – Todd Jamieson and Jamieson Chad McCranie, 4 Siblings – Bud Jamieson, Laura Smith, Gladys Donahue and Judy Mills and an infant son.

MR. HAROLD EUGENE "HAL" LAWSON, age 74, of Grenada, MS, formerly of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, October 29, at Antioch #1 Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Fred Parker officiating.

Mr. Lawson was a native of Dodge County, of the Catholic Faith and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He also served in the Air Force Reserves. He worked for the Department of the Navy (Naval Sea Systems Command) for over 30 years. Harold was a shipbuilder for submarines, destroyers and aircraft carriers. For 12 years, he was a program management analyst in New Orleans, LA, Pascagoula, MS and Arlington, VA. He graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College, University of Southern Mississippi and attended several technical colleges. He and his wife traveled for 3 years in their motor home. Due to health issues he purchased a small house in Grenada, MS, which gave him a home base. He was son of the late Ruby Allen Lawson & John Warren Lawson and was preceded in death by a Brother – Michael Lawson.

Mr. Vaughan was a native of Philadelphia, PA, of the Methodist Faith, and was a principal stockbroker for Wilbanks Securities of Oklahoma City, OK. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson Law School of Atlanta, where he obtained a Juris Doctor Degree. He obtained his Masters of Law Degree from John Marshall Law School of Atlanta and his International Law Degree from Exeter School of Law, of England. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, an Eagle Scout, and had a kind heart and was very caring to his family and animals. He was son of the late Anne Yanko Vaughan & Paul Albert Vaughan, Sr.

STAN DUPREE
1946 - October 11, 2014

MR. STANLEY MALLOYE “STAN” DUPREE, age 68, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at his home in Palm Desert, California. Stan was born on September 7, 1946 to Bill and Dorothy Dowdy Dupree in Thomaston, GA and was grandson of the late James and Betsy Mullis Dupree of Eastman and John and Rosalie Dowdy of Baxley, Georgia.

Stan attended high school at R. E. Lee Institute in Thomaston, GA, and received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of California School of Law (Boalt Hall). Stan served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He and his family donated the benches at the Vietnam Memorial Wall at the Dodge County Court House, and he was a guest speaker at the dedication in memory of his father who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Stan practiced law for a number of years in the San Francisco area, after which he became a professor at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. Stan later became the Executive Director of Human Resources.

Stan is survived by his wife of 23 years, Rhonda Dupree of Palm Desert, his son Skip Dupree and his wife Angie Kunst-Dupree, his daughter Caroline Dupree Christie and her husband David Christie, his grandsons Jackson Dupree and Calvin Christie, and his granddaughters Kate Dupree and Scarlett Dupree, his sister, Phyllis Dupree Karlin and her husband Ron Karlin and his brother Larry “Billy” Dupree and his wife Sharron Dupree. Stan’s parents and brother were born in Eastman, GA. Stan had numerous relatives in Dodge County and the surrounding area including Josey and June Dupree, Jimmy “Butch” Dupree, Jeanine Dupree Williams and Wayne Williams, Charlene Dupree Riddle and Tony Riddle, the late Edward “Brother” and Jean Dupree and the late Joe and Doretha Dupree, with whom Stan and his brother Billy spent many happy summers. Stan was a lifelong football fan of the Stanford Cardinal and the San Francisco 49ers and an avid golfer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Forest Lawn, in Cathedral City, California on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 12:00PM. Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home of Eastman assisted the family locally.

MR. WILLIAM VANCE MULLIS, age 79, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at the Coliseum Medical Center, in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, October 17, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Troy Dykes and Dr. Donnie Sutton officiating, with interment in Gresston Holiness Cemetery.

Mr. Mullis was a member of Gresston Baptist Church and a retired employee of Armstrong. He enjoyed camping and the outdoors, and was a great father and provider for his family, who also loved restoring campers and RVs. He was son of the late Flossie Duke Mullis & Jim Frank Mullis and was preceded in death by 3 Brothers – Leroy Mullis, Emmitt Mullis and J. F. Mullis.

MRS. MAGGIE SUE BLOODWORTH SHEFFIELD, age 83, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, October 13, 2014 at Fairview Park Hospital, Dublin.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, October 16, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Joe Buford, Rev. Glenn Jackson and Rev. Matt Haywood officiating, with interment in Zebulon Cemetery.

Mrs. Sheffield was a member and Sunday school teacher of Zebulon Baptist Church, where she also attended mission trips, a member of the Dodge County Hospital Pink Ladies for over 15 years, and a retired candy supervisor for Stuckey’s Inc. She was faithful wife for over 46 years, a loving mother, sister, and grandmother to her family. She was daughter of the late Gladys Hurst Bloodworth & James Joseph Bloodworth, widow of Needham R. Sheffield and was preceded in death by a Son – Steven Sheffield and 5 Siblings – Raymond Bloodworth, Cornelia Butler, Homer Bloodworth, Lois Boulan and Martha Lou Swinson.

AUBREY DEWITT YAWN
1938 - October 11, 2014

AUBREY DEWITT YAWN, age 76 of Canton, GA, passed away on October 11, 2014 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee. Mr. Yawn is survived by his wife of fifty-one years Nadine Yawn of Canton, GA; also by son and daughter-in-law, Farris and Stacy Yawn of Canton, GA along with two sister-in-laws, Virginia Gillis and Martha Scales.

Mr. Yawn was born in Milan, Georgia and his family soon moved to Chauncey, Georgia where he lived till he was ten. He also lived in New Orleans, Douglas, Atlanta and Eastman, Georgia. It was in Eastman that he met the love of his life, Nadine Allen. The family moved to Canton in 1978 when he took a job as a teacher at Cherokee High School, where he worked until his retirement in 1993.

Aubrey trained as a young man to be a photographer, but made his mark as a talented master mechanic. He found his true passion, however, as a teacher. He truly loved helping young people reach their potential, especially when he could help at-risk kids turn their lives around. There are many men and women that have told him that they gave him credit for getting them on the right track and in large degree for their success.

He had a huge heart and would go out of his way to help anyone in need. He was always generous with his time and talents, and asked for nothing in return except that you do the same for others. Most importantly, he loved his family with all his heart, and they loved him back just as much. He will be missed.

He was also well known as a talented cook who was always looking to add his special touch to a new dish. He also naturally loved to sample new recipes and really loved finding new ways to prepare his favorites. He always enjoyed working on his technique and his grilling equipment.

The funeral service will take place on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 12 Noon in the Chapel of Darby Funeral Home. Dr. C.R. Hill and Reverend Jim McRae will be officiating the service. A visitation will be held from 6:00PM-8:00PM Monday, October 13, at Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home, Eastman. Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday, October 14, at Vilula Baptist Church Cemetery, Eastman. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to The Ed Tower Family Fund at Canton First United Methodist Church where he was a member, or to your favorite charity. She was a former paraprofessional and teachers aide at Moreland Elementary, daughter of the late Angielue Tripp Bryant & Frank Bryant and was preceded in death by 3 Siblings – Willie Frank Bryant, Jean B. Joiner and Ronnie Earl Bryant.

MR. DOYCE EUGENE MULLIS, SR., age 78, of Plainfield, GA, died Sunday, October 5, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Mullis was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Plainfield Baptist Church and a 1954 graduate of Eastman High School. He was a former member of Eastman Lions Club, a member of the Eugene Smith Masonic Lodge #279 and the Dodge County Shrine Club, where he was devoted to children’s charities. He was a farmer, co-owner of both Mullis Vault Company and Dodge County Livestock Market, and a former manager of the Macon Farmers’ Market. He was a retired public official serving as the Dodge County Commissioner for 8 years and Probate Judge for 16 years. He was son of the late Odie Parkerson Mullis & William Henry Mullis and was preceded in death by a Sister – Mildred Stuckey and 6 Brothers – Fulton Mullis, Felder Mullis, F. T. Mullis, Donald Mullis, James Mullis and Gilbert Mullis.

MR. JOHN CLARK WILLIAMSON , age 89, of Rhine, GA, died Saturday, October 4, 2014 at his residence in Dodge County.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 6 at 3:00PM in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Rhine, with Rev. Tim Moorhouse and Rev. Bobby Ryals officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Williamson was born in Dodge County, a member and deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a 53 year Retired Dodge County Board of Education School Bus Shop Foreman. He was a loving husband, father and brother who enjoyed fishing and watching sports games on television. He was son of the late Lizzie Joiner Williamson and W.T. Williamson and was preceded in death by his sister- Willie Clara Strickland, brother-in-law- Clifford Dykes, mother-in-law- Sallie Bowen Dykes and father-in-law- John R. Dykes.

Waitus Dupree Harrell, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014.

Mr. Harrell, the son of the late Theo Merle Harrell and Arlie Walker Harrell was born February 28, 1932, in Eastman, Georgia. His daughter, Wendy Michelle Harrell preceded him in death. He retired from Big Star Grocery Store as a meat cutter.

Mrs. Burch was a native of Panama City, FL, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, a homemaker, daughter of the late Maud Montegue Hawkins & Col. Michael Benjamin Hawkins and widow of Dr. Reuben F. Burch, III. She was a former Sunday School teacher, GA leader, WMU past president and Girl Scout Leader. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Colonists, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, an avid reader and loved cooking, sewing and needlework. For many years, she provided the hospitality for the Burch family hunting guide business, and in later years was actively involved in managing the family farm. She was preceded in death by a Maternal Grandfather – Dr. Andrew Phillip Montegue, who was an acting president of Mercer University, a Brother – Edward Montegue “Monty” Hawkins and Sister – Phyllis Hawkins Engelke.

Survivors: Daughter – Margaret Sue “Peggy” Burch of Eastman; 2 Sons – Reuben F. Burch, IV (Regina) of Montevallo, AL and Edward H. Burch (Angie) of Eastman; 4 Grandchildren – Reuben F. Burch, V (Stephanie) of Memphis, TN, Emmaline Burch of Montevallo, AL, Jonathan Sheffield and Isabelle Burch both of Eastman; Niece – Karen Hawkins of Tallahassee, FL; Nephew – Mike Hawkins (Alison) of Baton Rouge, LA.

MRS. RUTHIE MAE WARREN BRYANT, age 89, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Dogwood Gardens.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, September 26, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Charles Hardeman and Mr. Ken Rogers officiating, with interment in Zebulon Cemetery.

Mrs. Bryant was born in Laurens County, but had lived in Dodge County since 1941. She was a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Hope Sunday School Class, a retired employee of Stuckey’s Inc., and enjoyed gardening, reading, baking and crossword puzzles. She was daughter of the late Vera Knight Warren & James Ira Warren, widow of Irvin Bryant and was preceded in death by a Son – Harold Bryant, 2 Grandsons – Glynn Bryant & Justin Sims and Brother – Duane Warren.

Survivors: 2 Daughters – Linda Bryant (Bruce Butts) of Lilburn, GA and Brenda B. MRS. ESTHER MARIE WOODARD WILLIAMS, age 74, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Fairview Park Hospital, Dublin.

Mrs. Williams was a native of Laurens County, a member of Cottondale Baptist Church, a former member of the birdies and a homemaker. She enjoyed reading, golfing, traveling, the mountains and loved her family. She was daughter of the late Mary Mable Woodard Cassady & John Baptist “Shorty” Cassady and widow of Billy J. Williams, Sr.

Marion "Pete" Davis Silver
1939 - September 19, 2014

Mrs. Marion Davis Silver, affectionately known as "Pete", died on Friday, September 19, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. Pete was born in RFD DeSoto on February 20, 1939. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Addison Davis, Jr. and Maidee Conley Davis Walker; and by her husband, Stanley Silver.

Pete graduated from Americus High School and Georgia Southwestern College. She was an outstanding student who loved sports and dancing. She was honored as a Superlative in her Senior class. In addition to being a cheerleader at Americus High School, Pete loved playing basketball, both in high school and college. At Georgia Southwestern, Pete was elected co-Captain of the basketball team in 1958 and 1959, and won numerous medals including, All Tournament and Sportsmanship Awards. Pete was also elected a "GSW Favorite" and Sweetheart of Kappa Sigma Phi Fraternity. In 2002, Pete was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Following college, Pete moved to Atlanta and worked as a Reservations Agent for Delta Air Lines; she later moved to New York City where she became a Supervisor in New York Reservations, acted as an Administrative Assistant for the Vice President for Delta and went on to become a Chief Supervisor. Pete traveled extensively to Europe, Asia and The Middle East.

Returning to Americus in 1990, Pete became very involved in community organizations.

She first became a GSW Foundation Board Member, served as Secretary of the GSW Foundation, Finance Committee, Executive Committee, Chairman of Compensation Committee and Sumter County Initiative Board Member. Pete was a member of Habitat for Humanity and worked along with former President, Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter building one of the first homes here in Americus. She was involved with raising funds for the Windsor Hotel, the Rylander Theater and for the construction of the new Americus Hospital following the tornado.

Pete was always very generous and passionate about her family, her friends and her precious pets.

Pete is survived by her brother Joseph Addison (Bubber) Davis, III and his wife, Wyndy of Leesburg; her sister Shirley Davis Mattingly and her husband, Don of Clearwater, FL, son Clifford Silver and daughter Denise Silver Leinhardt, (husband Julian) and children Carli and Samantha, of Boca Raton, Fla. She is survived by many loved nieces and nephews including Ann Marie Hatcher. She is survived by her long-time caregiver, Mary Louise Singleton of Americus who was very special to Pete.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, September. 22, 2014, at Aldridge Funeral Services, 612 Rees Park, Americus, GA at 6:00pm.

In lieu to flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice P.O. Box 1434 Americus, Ga. 31709. Burial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus. The Hilliard Brothers, from Rhine, GA, are musicians for the funeral service.

MR. RAY LAMAR HUTCHINSON, age 81, of Chester, GA, died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Fairview Park Hospital, Dublin.

Mr. Hutchinson was a native of Treutlen County, GA, of the Baptist Faith, a veteran of the U. S. Army and was a retired employee of General Motors, for over 30 years. He went to Pontiac, MI to work for General Motors Truck and Coach Division at the age of 18, and moved to Dodge County upon his retirement in 1978. He was son of the late Beann Luvenia Hutchinson & Nelson Vernon Hutchinson, Sr. and was preceded in death by a Sister – Eloise Hutchinson, 4 Brothers – Nelson Vernon Hutchinson, Jr., Everett Hutchinson, Aaron Hutchinson and Hugh Hutchinson and a Grandson – Jeffery Dewayne “Buddy” NeSmith.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his granddaughter, was son of the late Edith Heedick Roberts & Floyd M. Roberts and was preceded in death by a Brother – Billy Gene Roberts.

MR. ROBERT LEE “BOB” BENNETT, JR., age 69, of McDonough, GA, died Sunday, September 14, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Bennett, born in Dodge County and was a native of Wilcox County, was a faithful member of Mason Lodge #399, for over 30 years, coached youth football for over 30 years and a was retired supervisor for General Motors. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School, where he was a state champion on the track team, a graduate of South Georgia Technical College and was son of the late Ellen Stanley Bennett and Robert Lee Bennett, Sr.

Mr. Bowen was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, a graduate of Rhine High School, and a true friend to all he met. He was a former road construction machine operator for Ocmulgee Construction Company, a timber cruiser for the W. T. Harrell Pulp Wood Company, and a retired farmer, welder and blacksmith. Mr. Bowen hosted the Thursday Lunch Fish Fry for over 40 years. He was son of the late Willie Mae Coley Bowen & Jack Bowen, widower of Julia McDuffie Bowen and was preceded in death by a Son – Joseph Jackson “Jack” Bowen and Sister – Ruth Bowen.

MR. ROY EMMETT JUMP, age 81, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at Taylor Regional Hospital, Hawkinsville, GA.

Mr. Jump was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member, deacon and clerk of Central Baptist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason of Masonic Lodge #536, Helena, GA, and a Korean War veteran of the U. S. Army. He was a retired civil service employee of Robins AFB and son of the late Bessie Alma Clements Jump & Emmett Jump.

MS. GLENDA PENELOPE COBB BOWEN, age 78, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Taylor Regional Hospital.

Ms. Bowen was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Midway Baptist Church, a former columnist for the Hawkinsville Dispatch, a Pink Lady at Taylor Regional Hospital, for over 20 years, and a retired 19th Bomb Wing Commander’s Secretary at Robins AFB, where she received the Black Knight Award. She was daughter of the late Julia Piper Cobb & Raleigh Cobb and was preceded in death by 2 Sons – Bruce Manning and Philip Manning and a Sister – Patricia Inez Cobb Mullis.

Mr. McDuffie was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, the oldest member of Vilula Baptist Church, a retired commercial contractor for over 30 years and worked with the Eastman Housing Authority for over 21 years. He was a family man who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was son of the late Elizabeth McCranie McDuffie & Joseph Royal McDuffie and was preceded in death by 11 Siblings – Jewel M. Smith, Estelle Gillis, Alice Carnett, Bessie Pitts, Carrie Pitts, Betty Crooks, Eva Boyd, Julia Bowen, Alec McDuffie, Joe McDuffie and Henry McDuffie.

MRS. VIRGINIA WESTBROOK SPONAUGLE, age 86, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Crossview Care Center, Pineview, GA.

A Memorial Visitation (Celebration of Life) will be held on Saturday, September 6th from 1pm – 3pm at Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home. Interment will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon, Ohio.

Mrs. Sponaugle was born in Laurens County but had lived in Dodge County for many years. She was of the Baptist Faith. She was the widow of Denver Sponaugle of Lorain, Ohio. Mrs. Sponaugle was daughter of the late Nancy Evans Westbrook and Ed Westbrook. She was preceded in death by her sisters – Evelyn Barlow, Avis Harold and Annie Talbot and her brothers – Olin Westbrook, Ralph Westbrook and W. L. Westbrook.

Survivors include numerous Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

REV. JOSEPH DANIEL “DAN” JONES, age 72, of Milan, GA, passed away, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Regency Hospital in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 5, in Southside Baptist Church, McRae, with Rev. Rick Brown and Rev. Benny Moore officiating, with interment in Antioch #2 Cemetery, Milan, with Rev. Jack Lee and Rev. Bill Jones officating. The body will lie in state one hour before the service in Southside Baptist Church.

Rev. Jones was a life long native of Dodge County and served as a Baptist Minister for 34 years. He was currently serving as the pastor of Southside Baptist Church in McRae and had served previously at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Greenlawn Baptist Church. He was the former Owner & Operator of Milan Auto Parts, worked with Seaboard Coastline Railroad and the Bank of Milan for 13 years. He was a former self-employed truck driver. He was the son of the late Omega Norris Jones and Guy Clinton Jones and was preceded in death by his Brother – Doyle C. Jones, Sr.

Survivors: Wife – Margie Nell Hilliard Jones of Milan; Daughter – Dana Jones of Augusta; Sister – Cynthia J. She was a true southern belle, and hospitality was her specialty. She loved to cook and care for her family. She was daughter of the late Maggie Dye Strickland & Robert Horace “Preacher” Strickland, widow of Fred Flanders and was preceded in death by a Daughter – Donna Flanders Tomerlin, Son – Bobby Flanders, Sister – Clyde Lee Welch and Brother – Jack Strickland.

MR. JOHN CALVIN “SONNY” FOUNTAIN, JR., age 65, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Serenity Place in Dublin.

Mr. Fountain was a native of Dodge County, member of Eastside Baptist Church, and a retired mechanic from Goodyear Tire Company. He was a veteran of the U S Army and served in the 35th Engineering Combat Battalion in Vietnam and in the Army National Guard. He was a CB radio enthusiast and repairman and enjoyed repairing computers. He was the son of the late Lois Sheffield Fountain and John Calvin Fountain, Sr. and was preceded in death by his Sister – Betty Jean Sheffield and 2 Brothers – Billie Joe Fountain and Dannie Fountain.

1926 - July 12, 2014

MR. JOHN EDWARD “ED” SIMMONS, almost 88 years old, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, July 17 at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Graton Helms officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Born just before the Great Depression in Eastman, Georgia to Epsie and Albert Simmons, Ed Simmons turned adversity into achievement as an exemplary member of the Greatest Generation. At age 14, Ed delivered papers to the entire town of Eastman riding his bike 26 miles every morning. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the USS. Midway and put himself through college on the GI Bill in Accounting. Ed joined American Bankers Insurance Company excelling through initiative and as an early adopter of the latest technology. After 30 years, Ed spent the remainder of his life as a cattle and hay farmer. A conservation steward, he appreciated the quiet of the farm land he loved. Ed never missed a television football game, especially of his beloved UGA Bulldogs. Ed was known for his frugality, but strikingly generous to family, friends, and strangers. His proudest achievement was fathering his four children. He was a devoted husband to Joyce Simmons who he cherished and loved dearly. He was preceded in death by a Brother – Don Simmons.

He was the son of the late Margaret Williams Sanford and Howard C. Sanford and was preceded in death by his Brother – Wayne Sanford.

Mr. Bryant was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith and retired employee of Husqvarana Inc., of McRae. He loved his family, was a hard working honest man with a great heart, a Ford Mustang enthusiast, who loved antique cars and car shows. He was son of the late Angielue Tripp Bryant & Frank Wilbur Bryant and was preceded in death by a Sister – Lois Jean Joiner and Brother – Willie “Bo Weaval” Bryant, Sr.

Mr. Whigham was born in Tampa, FL, of the Baptist Faith, and was a retired plumber of 35 years. He was a fun-loving, witty person who enjoyed classic cars, Elvis Presley Music & Memorabilia, and enjoyed collecting antiques. He was a loving father, grandfather, and brother and enjoyed living in Eastman. He was the son of the late Welda Eugenia Davis Whigham and John Preston Whigham and was preceded in death by his Sister – Sylvia Anne Whigham.

MR. ROBERT GLENN “BOB” KIGHT, SR., age 87, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Dodge County Hospital.

Mr. Kight was born in Waycross, GA, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, and a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was a 38 year retired civil service employee of Robins AFB and a retired City of Eastman building inspector for 26 years. He was a member of the Eugene Smith Lodge #279, a member of Al Sihah Shrine Temple, Macon, GA, where he received his 30 year certificate, and a 32nd Degree Mason, where he received his 50 year certificate. He enjoyed country music, traveling, and watching western TV shows. He was a loving husband that enjoyed 67 years of marriage with his beautiful wife Betty and was a loving father and grandfather. He was son of the late Annie Smith Kight and Allison Kight and was preceded in death by a Son – Robert Glenn Kight, Jr.; 2 Sisters – Louise Taylor and Sara Tison, and 2 Brothers – Clinton Kight and James Kight.
