1952 - December 2, 2016

MRS. MARGIE DIANE JOINER AVILA, age 64, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, December 2, 2016 at Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at Southerland Funeral Chapel at 2:00PM Tuesday, December 6, with Dr. Billy Lee officiating, with interment in Parkerson Cemetery.

Mrs. Avila was born in Chauncey, GA, a member of Friendship Baptist Church, a homemaker and a former store clerk and waitress. She enjoyed spending time with her husband and family and will be missed by everyone who knew her. She loved animals, caring for her pets, was daughter of the late Vida Wright Joiner & Mose Joiner and was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Survivors: Husband of 23 years – Justo Avila of Eastman; 3 Sons – Mark Anthony Stewart, Casey Scott Stewart (Lisa) both of Eastman and Tracy Mosley (Angie) of Dublin; 6 Grandchildren – Casey Speaks, Krista Stewart, Anna Stewart, Chelsey Stewart, Ronald Mosley and Amber Mosley; Great-Granddaughter – Alyssa Muncher; Sister – Shirley Cannon (Chester) of Milan; 3 Brothers – Ray Joiner (Evelyn), Linder Joiner and John Levy “Polly” Joiner all of Eastman; Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. ELIZABETH MATTIE RUTH BOWEN STANLEY, age 70, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, December 3, in Stanley Family Cemetery, at the family residence, with Rob Stanley and Dr. Jerry Peele officiating.

Ruth was born and raised in Dodge County, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, a homemaker and dedicated wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was a graduate of Dodge County High School and lived in Quincy, FL for over 31 years before moving back to Dodge County. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and raising her family. Ruth was daughter of the late Julia McDuffie Bowen & Griff Bowen and was preceded in death by an Infant Daughter – Julie Stanley and a Brother – Joseph Jackson “Jack” Bowen.

Survivors: Husband of 48 years – Bobby Stanley of Eastman; 2 Sons – Rob Stanley (Kim) and Clay Stanley (Kim) both of Eastman; Caretaker – Mary Etta Glover of Rhine; 7 Grandchildren – Hunter, Walker, Skyler, Megan, Taylor, Drew and Griff; Great-Granddaughter – Allie; Brother – Lynn Bowen (Lisa) of Rhine; Sister-in-Law – Linda Walker Bowen of Rhine; Several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews.

MR. BOBBY DEWAYNE SHEFFIELD, age 63, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Dodge County Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, December 3, at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Arnold Rye officiating.

Mr. Sheffield was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Liberty Baptist Church, a former employee at Stuckey’s, Inc. for over 10 years and a 29 year retired computer specialist for Robins AFB. He was a 1970 graduate of Dodge County High School, attended Middle Georgia College and enjoyed spending time with his family and sharing many great times with his grandchildren. Dewayne was preceded in death his father Clarence Sheffield.

MR. W.D. LANE
1939 - November 29, 2016

MR. WILLIAM DAVID “W.D.” LANE, age 77, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30AM Friday, December 2, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Clyde Evans and Dr. Jerry Peele officiating, with interment in Giddens-Harrell Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Cook officiating.

Mr. Lane was born in Eastman and a member of First Baptist Church. He was a deacon and song leader during his time at Cottondale Baptist Church and a retired Dodge County Farm Bureau Agency Manager for over 40 years. He was a 1957 Graduate of Eastman High School and a College Graduate. W.D. was a loving Husband, Father, Step-Father and Grandfather to his family and served in both the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard. He enjoyed fishing, singing, and song writing including his 1974 published song “I Thank My Jesus” and was a member of the Gospel singing group “Ronnie Calhoun and the Psalmists.” He was son of the late Pearl Garrett Lane & William O. Lane and was preceded in death by his first Wife of 27 years and mother of their two children – Bedie Jo Dykes Lane and his Siblings – Bo Lane, Joe Lane, Dot Lee, Bertha Evans, and Sybil Giddens.

MRS. PATRICIA DIANNE WILLIAMSON PACKEY, age 66, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, November 25, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, November 28, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Dwaine Dunn officiating, with interment in Sweet Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Chauncey.

Mrs. Packey was a native of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith, a graduate of Dodge County High School and a graduate of Georgia Baptist College of Nursing. She was a longtime nurse at Houston Medical Center, a lifelong caregiver and enjoyed antiquing and crocheting. She was a dedicated wife, a proud mother of her two Air Force Veteran sons, a loving grandmother and little sister to her big brother James. Mrs. Packey was daughter of the late Rosa Lee Wright Williamson & Horace Williamson and widow of Joseph Lee Packey.

MR. STUART H. “STU” FLOYD, JR., age 57, of Chester, GA, died Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00PM Wednesday, November 23, at Lister Cemetery in Chester, with Rev. Craig Minor officiating.

Mr. Floyd was a member, deacon and song leader of Pine Level Freewill Baptist Church, a 1977 graduate of Dodge County High School, earned a degree for Diesel Mechanic from ABAC and was a longtime farmer for Sanders Farms. He loved his church, was a committed FARMALL enthusiast, a fireman for Chester Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Stu was son of the late Nelle Nobles Floyd & Stuart H. “Jake” Floyd, Sr.

Survivors: Wife of 32 years – Cheryl Rozier Floyd of Chester; 2 Sons – Rev. MR. JACK COLWELL COTTON, age 81, of Groveland, FL, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, FL.

Mr. Cotton was a native of Fort Gaines, GA, attended West Orlando Baptist Church, a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran and was the retired owner of C & S Hauling, a land clearing and hauling business for over 30 years. He was a family man, a dedicated husband, a hard worker and enjoyed the outdoors. Jack was son of the late Georgia Alice Colwell Cotton & Charlie Will Cotton and was preceded in death by 4 Siblings – George Cotton, William Cotton, Janice Slaughter and Betty Lewis; 2 Step-Sisters – Barbara Mielke and Lois Collins and a Brother-in-Law – Maloy Giddens.

Mrs. Chapman was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member and former secretary of El Bethel Baptist Church, president of the WMU at El Bethel and was a retired textile worker for Dowling Textiles. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved the Lord and her church. Wilda was daughter of the late William David Helms & Annie May Ford Pace, widow of Joe Allen Chapman and was preceded in death by a Son – Oscar Allen Chapman and 2 Brothers – Wilbur Helms and Junior Yawn.

Chris was born in Wurzburg, Germany, of the Baptist Faith, a graduate of Northside High School and was employed as a security guard and formerly as a US Naval Base security guard. He enjoyed working and spending time with his family. Chris aspired to follow his dad in the military and also dreamed of becoming a peace officer.

She was a member of Chauncey Baptist Church and was a loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was daughter of the late Lula Grissom Sanders & Ivy Conklin Sanders, widow of Rev. Hobson Brown, Jr. and was preceded in death by 4 Siblings – Junior Sanders, Earl Sanders, Blanche Mullis and Jean Martin.

MRS. AMANDA LYNN WILKINSON LOWERY, age 36, of Eastman, GA, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, November 14, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Fred Parker officiating, with interment in Antioch #1 Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Lowery, born in Jacksonville, FL, was a member and Sunday school teacher of Antioch #1 Baptist Church and a physical therapist for Dublinair Nursing Home. She was the 1998 Valedictorian of Pierce County High School, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgia Southern University with a B.S. Degree in Kinesiology in 2002 and received her athletic trainer certificate. In 2004 she received her Masters of Physical Therapy from Armstrong State University. Amanda was the #1 fan of Florida State University and was a dedicated wife and a Godly, loving mother to her children. She was preceded in death by her Grandfathers – M.L. Carter, Jr. and C.E. Wilkinson, Jr. and her Uncle – Mark Carter.

Mrs. Mullis was born in Pulaski County, a member of Midway Baptist Church, a former Dodge Elementary Lunchroom Manager and a 30 year retired seamstress for C & J Manufacturing. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, spending time and caring for her family and reading to her grandchildren. She was daughter of the late Ada Smith Jennings & Grover Cleve Jennings, widow of Jeter Mullis and was preceded in death by 8 Siblings – Sammy Jennings, Robert “Bo” Jennings, Henry Jennings, Gene Jennings, Raymond Jennings, Billy Jennings, Annie Mae Woods and Alma Jennings Gatlin.

COL. (Ret.) ROBERT CAROL “BOB” JOHNSON, age 76, of Milan, GA, died on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 in the Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00PM Friday, October 28, at Antioch #2 Baptist Church in Milan, with Rev. Jack Lee officiating, with interment in Lindsey Cemetery in McClure, IL.

Mr. Johnson was born in Cape Girardeau, MO. A member of Antioch #2 Baptist Church, he was a church deacon, Sunday school teacher and song leader. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and a Retired Colonel in the Ohio Air National Guard. Bob retired after 28 years as a Civil Service employee at Wright-Patterson AFB in Fairborn, OH. His hobbies included fishing, reading and listening to southern gospel music. He was the son of the late Naomi Randol Johnson and Lester Raymond Johnson. He was preceded in death by a Son – Jerry Johnson, Brother – Lester Ray Johnson and Sister – Cydnee Johnson Hamby.

MRS. GENEVA DENNIS GIDDENS, age 88, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Heart of Georgia Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, October 28, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Royce McClelland and Mr. Ken Rogers officiating, with interment in Giddens-Harrell Cemetery.

Mrs. Giddens was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Ocmulgee Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed cooking, gardening, her church, and was a master of hospitality. Geneva was daughter of the late Emma Taylor Dennis & Columbus Edward “Bud” Dennis, widow of Oren Paschal “Pal” Giddens and was preceded in death by a Grandson – Matt Parkerson and 6 Siblings – Gladys Rogers, Thelma Jones, Leroy Dennis, Jahugh Dennis, Alfred Dennis and Curtis Dennis.

THOMAS H. GREER Major, US Army (Retired)
1964 - October 21, 2016

MAJ (Ret.) Thomas Harter Greer, age 52, of Rhine, GA, died Friday, October 21, 2016, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, October 24, at Sand Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Joey Bohannon, Reverend Danny Gay, LTG Scott Miller, CSM (Ret.) Greg Birch and MSG (Ret.) Max Mullen officiating. Interment will follow in Sand Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Major Greer retired in February 2005 after more than twenty years in the US Army. He served fifteen years in special operations units, as both a non-commissioned and commissioned officer. Most notably, he served as an instructor at the US Army Ranger School, eight years in the 75th Ranger Regiment, and five years as an operational member of Delta Force.

Major Greer spent 22 months in three separate hostile fire zones and was twice decorated for valor for combat actions in Afghanistan. He hunted war criminals in the Balkans, was the assault force commander on numerous direct action raids against Al Qaeda and Taliban personalities in Afghanistan, and participated in the hunt for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq. In all three hot spots, Tom operated with intelligence analysts and operatives from the CIA and worked extensively with foreign allied special operations forces and Navy SEALs during Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Following retirement, Major Greer served as the Senior Army Instructor for the Army JROTC program at Dodge County High School for one year. He then worked in the Nuclear Security industry for the next 10 years. His expertise has strengthened the security of all sixty Nuclear Power plants in America. He also served as chief military consultant for Sledgehammer Games during the making of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Advanced Warfare.

Tom is also a New York Times Best Selling author. His first book, Kill Bin Laden, was the true account of his experiences as the senior special operations ground force commander during the hunt for Osama Bin Laden in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in November 2001. The proceeds from this publication were donated to Special Operations Warrior Foundation, an organization that ensures surviving family members of our nation's dedicated special operators can pursue their dreams through higher education. He went on to author a series of Delta Force thrillers under the pen name, Dalton Fury. He was also owner and operator of DF Customs, LLC.

Tom graduated from Mount Vernon HS in Alexandria, Virginia in 1982. He earned a BS in History from Columbus College and a MA in Homeland Security with a concentration in Terrorism Studies from American Military University.

His proudest achievement in life was his relationship with Jesus Christ and being “daddy” to his two wonderful daughters. Tom was a member of Sand Grove Baptist Church.

Tom was the son of the late LTC (Ret.) Robert H. Greer and the late Peggy Daugherty Greer. He is the son-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Watkins. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Deidre W. Greer, his two daughters, Caitlin and Claire, his brother, CSM (Ret.) Steven (Jennifer) Greer, his aunt, Patricia G. (Jerry) Miller of Uniontown, OH, and uncles, Mike Greer of N Canton, OH and Oscar Stuckey of Cordele, GA. He was also survived by sister-in-law Pam (Tony) Knowles, brothers-in-law Tim (Brenda) Watkins, Mike (Elaine) Watkins, and Terry (Donna) Watkins, and numerous nieces and nephews.

MR. JOHN ROGER SMITH, SR., age 64, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Serenity Place Hospice in Dublin.

Mr. Smith was a native of Hazlehurst, a graduate of Dudley Hughes High School in Macon, achieved an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia College, a retired truck driver for Landstar, Inc., and a former diesel mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and enjoyed spending time with his family, racing and racing activities. He was son of the late Mary Catherine Murray Long & John Thomas Smith, Jr. and was preceded in death by a Grandson – Austin Watson and many siblings.

Mrs. Roland was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Cottondale Baptist Church and a 28 year retired dietitian for the Dodge Elementary School and North Dodge Elementary School. She was a loving mother and homemaker. Marcia was daughter of the late Josey Rogers Rowland & Ernest Rowland, widow of C.J. Roland and was preceded in death by a Sister – Rita Tripp and 3 Brothers – Roger Rowland, Lewis Roland and Doyle Rowland.

MR. R.L. PITTMAN, age 85, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00PM Friday, October 21 at Bowers Cemetery in Empire, with Mrs. Elaine Pittman, Mr. Johnny Davis and Rev. James Spires officiating.

Mr. Pittman was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, of the Christian Faith and a former owner and operator of Pittman Welding Shop and Green Thumb Nursery both in Eastman. He was an owner of a late model sportsman that was raced at 441 Speedway and other Middle Georgia dirt tracks. He was an avid fisherman, inventor, Nascar racing fan and enjoyed western movies and gardening. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. R.L. was preceded in death by his Son – James R. Pittman, was the son of the late Mamie Oxley Pittman & Bob Pittman and was preceded in death by several siblings.

Survivors: Wife – Maggie Walker Pittman of Eastman; Daughters – Myra Davis (Johnny) of Cordele and Elaine Pittman (Randy Durden) of Eastman; Grandchildren – Brent Davis (Kaye), Brooks Gibbs (Eric), Britni Martinez (Jason) and Blayre Durden (Tom Sheffield); Great-Grandchildren – Ella Grace Gibbs, Lizzy Rae Gibbs, Cotton Davis Gibbs and Gunner Jace Martinez; Numerous Nieces, Nephews and many close Friends including: Danny and Kim Koch.

VENAREE R. SHANNON
1940 - October 17, 2016

MRS. VENAREE ROLAND SHANNON, age 76, of Chester, GA, died Monday, October 17, 2016 at Serenity Place Hospice in Dublin.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, October 20, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Keith Hall & Rev. Mike Grenade officiating, with interment in Pine Level Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Venaree was a member of Pine Level Freewill Baptist Church and in her earlier years taught the intermediate Sunday school class. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. Venaree worked as a dental assistant after her girls were both in school. Later, she worked in a bank for a short time before getting the opportunity to work with the state at the District Health Department in Dublin as a clerk for the Stroke & Heart Attack Prevention Program. After working in the health department for ten years where she was promoted to secretary typist, senior secretary typist and served as Laurens County Registrar in birth and death records, she transferred to the Department of Corrections at Chester State Prison. She worked at Chester for five years and transferred to Eastman Youth Development Facility as an Accounting Tech. She was promoted to Administrative Services Manager and when the facility was changed from Department of Corrections to the Department of Juvenile Justice, she was promoted to the Administrative Operations Manager. After working there for about ten years she decided to retire in December 2003. She served on the Advisory Committee for the facility for several years after retirement. Venaree was born to the late Ida Lee Passmore Roland & R.C. Roland on March 6, 1940 and was preceded in death by a Brother – Billy Roland.

Survivors: Husband – Willie Oscar Shannon of Chester; 2 Daughters – Jane Sterling of Dublin and Sue Taylor (Tony) of Chauncey; 4 Grandchildren – Shannon Taylor, Shane Taylor, Chad Sterling and Adam Sterling; Son-in-Law – Ricky Sterling; 2 Sisters – Hazel Roland Bennett of Eastman and Syble Roland Pruett of Chester; 3 Brothers – Ronald Roland (Mae) and Dudley Roland (Dianne) both of Eastman and Jimmy Roland (Patsy) of Chester; Sister-in-Law – Ann Roland of Chester; Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. MILDRED ADEL LAW ROSS, age 93, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Magnolia Manor in St. Simons Island, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, October 19, in New Daniels Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Brearley and Rev. Roy Locke officiating. Interment will follow in Bowen Cemetery with Rev. Jim Faircloth officiating.

Mrs. Ross was a lifelong native of Dodge County, a member of New Daniels Baptist Church, and affiliate member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church. After high school she graduated Cosmetology school in Fitzgerald. She was later employed as a cosmetologist for Blue Bird Beauty Shop in Eastman. Mildred was also a homemaker, a loving wife of 62 years and a dedicated mother. She was later a candy maker for Stuckeys, Inc. where she retired after 20 years of service. She was daughter of the late Susie Campbell Law & Henry L. Law and was preceded in death by her Husband – Russell N. Ross; Daughter – Lisa Ross; Sister – Sue Jean Law Wilson; 2 Brothers – Clarence Law and John Lewis Law.

Survivors: 2 Daughters – Dona Sue Fisher (Jimmy) of Valdosta and Elaine Ross of St. Simons Island; 2 Grandsons – Mark Fisher (Jennifer) and Mike Fisher (Angie); 4 Great-Grandchildren – Abby Fisher, Ethan Fisher, Levi Fisher and Owen Fisher; Several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. MOYCE BERTON WOODARD, age 77, of Merritt Island, FL, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, October 22, at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Arnold Rye officiating.

Mr. Woodard was born in Eastman, a graduate of Eastman High School, graduated from Rollins College with a BS degree in Business Administration and was a retired U.S. Army veteran. He married the love of his life, LaVerne Bush in 1961. They moved to the Space Coast in 1971 and joined the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island. During his 35 year career, he was a Manager for GSA and received numerous accolades, including the NASA Silver Snoopy Award. He enjoyed coaching softball, woodworking, spending time with his family and was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. He was son of the late Hortense Cranford Woodard & Doyle Woodard and was preceded in death by 2 Brothers – James Woodard and William Woodard.

Mrs. Bostwick was a native of Purdy, OK and has lived in Eastman since 2006. She was a member of Church of Christ of Beacon Woods, FL, a former professional model, former owner & operator of Whispering Pines Motel in Blakely, GA and enjoyed sewing, screenwriting and traveling and spending time with her husband. Patsy was daughter of the late Ida Adlee Adkins & Otis Adkins and was preceded in death by a Brother – Bob Adkins.

MR. C. W. PEACOCK, age 95, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Peacock was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of First Baptist Church, a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines and a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a licensed funeral director, a former store manager for Stuckey’s, Inc. and owner & operator of Peacock Gulf Station and Peacock Oil. C.W. was son of the late Ruth Smith Peacock & Walter Emmis Peacock. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years – Mary Gatlin Peacock and 2 Brothers – Shaw Peacock and Paul Peacock.

Mr. Greer was a native of Akron, OH, a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel, who served in Vietnam and was awarded numerous awards including a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, for valor, and the Legion of Merit. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was son of the late Rose Mary Botos Greer & Frank Harter Greer and widower of Peggy Daugherty Greer.

Mr. White was a native of McRae, of the Baptist Faith, and a former welder for Horne’s Welding. James enjoyed fishing, attending auctions and spending time with family. DOROTHY YAWN
1940 - September 25, 2016

Mrs. Dorothy Eva “Tadpole” Yawn, age 76, of LaGrange, gained her angels wings on Sunday, September 25, 2016, while she was surrounded by her family. Tadpole was a member of Central Baptist Church in Eastman, Georgia. Tadpole was the daughter of the late Mary and Marvin Maddox of Eastman.

She is survived by her loving husband, Cecil Gene Yawn; two sons, Rusty (Judy) Yawn of LaGrange and Tracy (Amy) Yawn of Eastman; one sister, Maryann Jump of Eastman; three grandsons, Jason (Shonna) Yawn of LaGrange, Heath Yawn of Marietta, Georgia, Jordan Yawn of Eastman, Georgia and three great-grandsons, Kyle Bushey, Micheal Everett and Cody Yawn.

Due to Tadpole’s battle with cancer her wishes was to donate her body to science when she passed away, in hopes that the use of research on her body could lead the fight to curing the deadly disease. So she requested that there would not be any services. Her one request that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Western Heights Baptist Church, 2382 West Point Road, LaGrange, Georgia 30240, in the memory of Tadpole, in the fight to win lost souls to Christ or on line at westernheightsbaptistchurch.org. 1944 - September 19, 2016

MR. AUDREY WAYNE BROOKS, age 72, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, September 19, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Wednesday, September 21, at Eastman First Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony Brooks and Rev. Daryl Summey officiating, with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

Mr. Brooks was a native of Evergreen, AL, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church and a 47 year retired shipment manager for Gillman Paper Company. He was a 1967 graduate of Foley High School in Foley, AL, a college graduate in Jacksonville, FL and a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as a Military Police in Germany during the Vietnam War. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids, as well as baseball, softball coaching, tending his flowers, working in his yard and fishing trips to the Gulf shores. He was son of the late Lucille Roberts Brooks & Audrie Curtis Brooks and was preceded in death by his Wife – Connie S. Brooks and 2 Brothers – Bruce Brooks and Paul Brantley.

MRS. SARAH JAYNE WRIGHT HOBBS, age 72, of Kent, Washington, died Monday, September 12, 2016 at Garden Terrace Care Center in Federal Way, WA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, September 22, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Larry Waldrep officiating, with interment in Cedar Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cedar Grove.

Mrs. Hobbs was a native of Eastman, but had lived in Washington for many years. She was of the Christian Faith and a retired storage facility manager for Totem Storage in Kent, WA. Jayne was daughter of the late Opaline Brown Wright & George Wright, widow of James E. “Jimmy” Hobbs, Jr. and was preceded in death by a Son – Randy Benson.

MR. EDWARD “POPS” GLISSON, age 77, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, September 16, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Glisson was a native of Dodge County, a member of Gresston Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired truck driver. He enjoyed watching westerns, playing cards, Elvis Presley and spending time with family and friends. He was son of the late Mattie Lou Edge Glisson & Willie Lee Glisson and was preceded in death by 4 Sisters – Polly Barrett, Evelyn Cook, Mozelle Cooper and Louise Glisson and 3 Brothers – Bill Glisson, Marshall Glisson and Junior Glisson.

MRS. MELBA LOUISE PIPER MULLIS, age 89, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Dodge County Hospital.

Mrs. Mullis was a native of Dodge County, of the Baptist Faith and a retired sales clerk for Zayre. She was daughter of the late Mattie Mae Duke Piper & Gabe M. Piper, widow of John L. “Lon” Mullis and was preceded in death by 4 Sisters – Lillian P. Hutchinson, Nina P. Stuckey, Julia P. Cobb and Ruby P. Miller, Brother – Clifford S. Piper and 2 Nieces – Glenda Cobb Bowen and Patricia C. Mullis.

MARILENE HARRELL
1929 - August 26, 2016

MS. MARILENE HARRELL, age 86, of Tampa, FL, died Friday, August 26, 2016. She passed away at her home at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Carrollwood. She enjoyed the staff and other residents there and stayed active until her death.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, September 17, at Bay Springs Cemetery in Rhine, with Rev. Ricky Gilmore officiating.

Marline was born in 1929, in Rhine to Gary and Frances Harrell. They preceded her in death as did her beloved sister Milly Callahan. She was a 1946 graduate of Rhine High School and attended Georgia Southwestern College. She went on to graduate Law School at The John Marshall School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. She enjoyed a long career in insurance and moved to Tampa to work for the Chubb Group of Insurance. She mentored many young people, empowering them to have very successful careers. She retired at the age of 66, and spent her time volunteering and traveling the world. Marliene and her sister Milly loved to cruise and made many friends along the way. She loved all sports, especially the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tampa Bay Bucs.

She had a strong love and sense of commitment to her family and is survived by her Brother – Reuben Harrell of Rhine; Sister – Irene Urban of Lutz, FL; Nephews – Gary Buford Harrell and Michael Urban; Nieces – Gail Moore, Mary Ellen Shriver and Susan Urban; 5 Great-Nephews, 3 Great-Nieces and Great-Great-Nieces and Nephews.

SUE YAWN NEVANS
September 16, 1931 - September 11, 2016

Nell de Sue Yawn Kitchens Nevans, died peacefully in Chattanooga, TN, surrounded by her family, on September 11, 2016. She was 84 years young and lived every moment of her life to the fullest.

Left to honor Sue’s life and memory are her husband, Dr.William M. Nevans, Sr., her children, Keith (Celinda) Kitchens of Eau Claire, WI, Kyle Kitchens of Fort Myers, FL, and Kayla Kitchens Fricks of Chicago, IL; her beloved grandchildren, Dawn, Justin, Theresa, Ashley, Kevin, Christopher, Sarah, Kelsey, Kendra and Reid; and her great grandchildren, Phillip, Kaylee, Greyson, Maggie and Hunter.

She is also survived by her sister, Pat Jones of Milan, GA and is predeceased by her parents, Reuben and Maggie Evans Yawn, and her first husband, William Gordon Kitchens, with whom she was married to for nearly 50 years.

Sue was born and raised on a small farm in Milan, GA and graduated Salutatorian of Chauncey High School. At age 16, she moved to Macon, GA to attend nursing school and graduated to become an RN at the age of 18. She then married and began raising a family.

Following a move to Albany, Georgia, Sue began modeling and won the Mrs. Albany beauty pageant. In 1965, she and her family relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, and she started a new career as fashion coordinator for Maas Brothers department store, which later became Burdine’s. Sue enjoyed the world of fashion for 25 years and produced local fashion shows, created a high school fashion Teen Board, and operated her own modeling agency while working with many print publications, television production companies and charitable organizations. She was a member of the Ft. Myers Junior Woman's Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

After her retirement from Maas Brothers, Sue returned to nursing, getting recertified as a registered nurse, after being away from it for nearly three decades. She worked at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers and later near her second home in the mountains of Blairsville, GA. In 1999, she fully retired and began traveling the world with William, with whom she found love, laughter, happiness, fun and adventure.

Sue will always be remembered as a strong, beautiful southern woman who loved her family, her friends and her favorite hobby of nearly 40 years, genealogy. She touched many lives, young and old, through nursing, fashion, genealogy research, and her extensive travel adventures. She was a force of nature with a love of life unmatched and she will be dearly missed.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Friday, September 16, at Antioch #2 Baptist Church, with Rev. Jack Lee officiating, with interment in El Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. AMANDA WILSON
1984 - September 4, 2016

MS. AMANDA GABRIELLE WILSON, age 32, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, September 4, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, September 9, at Eastman First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Rick Mitchell and Rev. Gerald Conley officiating, with interment in Burch Cemetery in Chauncey.

Amanda was born in Warner Robins, Georgia on April 13, 1984. She was a 2002 honor graduate of Dodge County High School. She was voted the most athletic female of her graduating class. She later attended Middle Georgia College of Cochran, University of London in England, Mercer University of Macon, University of Georgia in Athens, Southwestern University of Americus and Brewton Parker College of Mount Vernon. She graduated in the top of her class with a BA degree in History. She presented her thesis on the Dodge Land Controversy to the board, faculty, staff and community of Brewton Parker.

She started her career in politics subsequent to graduation. She worked the national campaign for Barrack Obama in Ohio, the Roy Barnes campaign for Governor in Georgia, the Michelle Nunn campaign for United States Senate and the Wade McCord campaign in Macon. Most recently, she was working with the Democratic National Committee in Georgia for the election of Hillary Clinton for President. Her earliest involvement with politics involved collecting data on election results for Representative Terry Coleman who later became Speaker of the House of Representatives. She also worked with Representative Jimmy Pruett on a variety of political activities. Amanda was very active in the Democratic Party but believed strongly in bi-partisanship for the overall good of our society. Her credentials as an independent consultant and strategist were very well acknowledged and respected throughout the political community.

Amanda was also an excellent athlete. She competed at the local, state, regional, national and international levels as an Olympic style weightlifter. She excelled at all levels, winning gold medals at various meets throughout the United States and Canada, with a bronze medal in the Pan-Am Games in Mexico City, Mexico, as one of the youngest competitors. She was coached by expert Olympic-style coaches such as Johnny Coffee, owner of Coffee’s Gym in Marietta, David Jones, Olympian and personal trainer of Eastman, Mike Burgener, Crossfit coach, Michael Cohen, owner of Anderson Cohen Center of Savannah, Dragimire Cerolovich, National Olympic Coach of U.S.A weightlifting and John Thrush, Olympic Coach of Seattle, Washington. She spent many summers at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to represent her country in Olympics in 2000. These try-outs were to be held in Cairo, Egypt but postponed due to political turmoil in that part of the world. Amanda also played on two national championship softball teams with an exceptional batting average. She also loved all spectator sports.

Amanda was an avid reader, writer and historian. She loved the classics and works on noted authors of our day from Tolstoy to Salinger to Crews. She would often quote lines from various readings in everyday conversation. She would write on numerous subjects often sharing her insights with close friends and associates. She was very articulate on world, United States and local history, yet very opinionated on numerous aspects of Dodge County History.

Amanda was a conservationist, environmentalist and true lover of animals. She would go to great lengths to conserve our resources, protect our environment and treat animals in a humane manner. She especially loved our family pets giving them a personality, voice and place in the family of their own.

MR. LEAMON BROADNAX, age 88, of Fort Valley, GA, died Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Mr. Broadnax was a native of Mitchell, GA, of the Christian Faith and a lifelong farmer. He was a former dairy farmer, dog trainer and hunting guide for Oakland and Pine Knoll Hunting Plantations. Leamon enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends. He was son of the late Susan Johnson Broadnax & Brookin Broadnax and was preceded in death by a Daughter – Mary Susan Broadnax, 3 Sisters and 4 Brothers.

MR. RAYMOND CHARLES “PETE” HARDIN, age 80, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday, September 1, 2016 in Milledgeville Veterans Hospital.

Pete was a native of Eastman, a member, deacon and former Sunday School teacher of Eastman First Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a 47 year retired funeral director for Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home. He was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, served on the Benevolence Committee at First Baptist Church and enjoyed camping, animals, motorcycles and working in his yard. Pete was son of the late Vivian Peacock Hardin & Fred Hardin and was preceded in death by his Brother – Gene Hardin.

MR. DONALD RAY PURSER, JR., age 53, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, August 29, 2016 at his residence.

Don was a native of Dodge County, a 1980 graduate of the Baker Academy, attended UGA and was a graduate of Georgia State University with a marketing degree. He was a former dog trainer and a self employed real estate agent, who bought and sold real estate in New Mexico. Don enjoyed fishing, traveling and animals. He was preceded in death by his Father – Donald Purser.

MR. JASON ORAN WATERS age 41, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, August 27, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Waters was a native of Charleston, SC and was of Baptist faith. He was an Assistant District Attorney for the Oconee Judicial Circuit for the past 9 years and was formerly a law enforcement officer for 5 years in Charleston. He was a 1993 Graduate of Boiling Springs High School before earning a B.S. Degree in Political Science and a M.Ed. in Sports Management from the University of Georgia. Jason received his Juris Doctor from Georgia State University in 2007. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid reader, loved history and enjoyed watching Georgia Bulldog football and basketball. He is preceded in death by his daughter – Ava Elizabeth Waters.

Mr. Walker was a native of Telfair County, a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, a 1960 graduate of Milan High School and a retired conductor for CSX Railroad for over 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to the beach with his family. He was preceded in death by his Father – Ernest Clyde Walker.

MR. WILLIAM TIMOTHY “TIM” ATKINSONage 50, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Mr. Atkinson was a member of Gresston Baptist Church, a 1984 graduate of Dodge County High School, an Avionics Technician at Warner Robins Air Force Base, passionate about his family and loved his niece and nephews. He was an experienced culinary artist who enjoyed cooking for his family and wedding events. He was a former owner and operator of Tim’s Place in Gresston, Soup Zone in Eastman and Bucky’s Diner in Cochran. He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents Mattie Lou Jackson and Earnest Grover Jackson and Paternal Grandparents Nellie Mae Garrett Atkinson and Earnest Tim Atkinson.

After retirement he was a produce farmer and enjoyed raising cattle. He was son of the late Zomia Dobbs Holtzclaw & James Gordon Holtzclaw, widower of Naomi Peterson Holtzclaw and was preceded in death by a Step-Son – Gene Peterson, Step-Mother – Gaynelle Holtzclaw and Sister – Burlene Mann.

OFFICER TIMOTHY KEVIN “TIM” SMITH age 30, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, August 13, 2016 in the line of duty in Eastman, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, August 18 at the Dodge County High School Gymnasium, with Pastor Dahl McDermitt officiating, with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Officer Smith was a native of Bacon County and of the Christian Faith. He was a 6 year veteran of the Eastman Police Department. His career was his life. He took his job seriously as a law enforcement officer and wore his badge proudly. He was previously employed with the Abbeville, Uvalda, Glenwood and Jacksonville, GA Police Departments. Tim enjoyed spending time with his children and his hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by a Daughter – Tayla Laydon Smith and Paternal Grandfather – Lewis G. Smith.

Mr. Peacock was a native of Eastman, of the Baptist faith and a retired construction worker. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking care of animals and riding his bicycle. He also enjoyed trips to the beach, fishing and following political news on TV. He was son of the late Curtis Peacock and was preceded in death by a Brother – Mack Peacock.

Mr. Jones was a lifelong resident of Eastman, of the Christian Faith and an employee for the Dodge County Road Department and manager of the Dodge County Landfill for over 31 years. He was a loving father and grandfather, who enjoyed classic cars, Nascar racing and was an avid Elvis fan. He enjoyed farming in his early life and was a former employee of Reeves Brothers Cotton Mill and Kelwood, Inc. Barney was son of the late Geneva Jackson Jones & Barney Felton Jones, Sr. and was preceded in death by a Brother – Ricky D. Jones.

Miss Edwards was born in Eastman, GA to parents, T.C. and Inez Hodges Edwards. She graduated from Georgia State Womans College in Valdosta. She then moved to Chattanooga where she retired from TVA with 42 years of service. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga for 72 years. Louise enjoyed international travel, she was a tutor for English second language students, taught Sunday school for several years, and volunteered at the Community Kitchen.

She is survived by several cousins including: Celeste Furr (Richard) of Marietta, Mitzi Smiley (Jim) of Monroe, Terry Black of Birmingham, AL, Gail Anderson of Cordele, Dana Beabout (Jeff) of Alabaster, AL, Jessica Black of Birmingham, AL, and Myrtice Edwards of Eastman.

MRS. ELIZABETH ANNE MULLIS VAUGHANage 65, of Tucker, GA, died Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Hospice of Atlanta Center.

Elizabeth was born in Linz, Austria, the eldest of five children. As the daughter of an Army serviceman, she spent her childhood travelling the world and graduated from Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokohama, Japan in 1968; she subsequently graduated from Georgia Southwestern with a degree in communications and a minor in mathematics in 1975. She was a successful pioneer in the early days of information technology, which she left to devote her focus to being a full-time homemaker and mother for her two children. Elizabeth was insatiably curious from a young age, and shared many eclectic interests with her inseparable friend Maggie Estes, including bug collecting, sewing, home remodeling, art, and gardening. Beyond a loving mother and grandmother, she cared deeply in thought and practice for family and friends regardless of circumstance, age, or condition. She was daughter of the late Ingeborg “Inge” Falzeder Mullis & William T. “Bill” Mullis, Sr., widow of Paul A. Vaughan, Jr. and was preceded in death by 2 Brothers – William T. “Bill” Mullis, Jr. and Newton Charles Mullis.

Mrs. Steele was a native of Chauncey, a member of Eastman First Christian Church, a 1937 honor graduate of Rocky Ford High School and a retired seamstress for Reeves Brothers, Inc. and C & J Manufacturing. She was a loving mother, a wonderful grandmother and an excellent seamstress. Mrs. Steele enjoyed fishing, sewing and spending time with family and friends. She was daughter of the late Edna Holcombe Haupt & Sam Haupt, widow of Walter B. Steele and was preceded in death by her Son – Kenny Steele, Son-in-Law – Paul E. “Butch” Milner and 3 Great-Grandsons – Cole Milner, Drew Milner and Rusty Wilcox.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed working with his tools, watching westerns and helping others. He was son of the late Alma Pittman Singletary & Henry Clarence “H.C.” Singletary and was preceded in death by a Sister – Judy S. Attaway.

Mr. Vaughn was born in McRae, GA, of the Baptist Faith, a graduate of Telfair County High School and a graduate of Ben Hill Irwin Technical School. He was a former employee of the Department of Transportation, for over 10 years, MDI, for over 5 years and a current employee for the City of Fitzgerald as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed watching football, wrestling and spending time with family and friends.

MRS. LIZZIE VIOLA STUCKEY GIDDENS YARLEY age 98, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, July 24, 2016 at the Dodge County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Wednesday July 27, at Eastman First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Clay Layfield officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Yarley was born in Wilkinson County and was a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sallie Bacon Sunday School Class. She was a retired office assistant for Dr. Saul J. Rubin, where she worked for over 18 years, and a former employee of Miss America Department Store. Mrs. Yarley was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed her work and yard work. She was the daughter of the late Dannie Lee (Rutherford) Stuckey & Thomas “Tom” Stuckey and was preceded in death by her Husbands – Lonnie H. Giddens and D. Boyd Yarley, Grandson – Gregory Scott Giddens and 7 Brothers and Sisters.

Survivors: Son – Bobby “Sonny” Giddens (Peggy) of Eastman; Grandson – Joseph W. MR. STEVE WESLEY COUEY age 56, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, July 22, 2016 at his residence in Dodge County.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30PM Sunday, July 24, in Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Blake Couey and Rev. Sterling Averett officiating, with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

Mr. Couey was a resident of Dodge County, a member and Deacon of Bethel Baptist Church, a 1978 graduate of Dodge County High School and earned a degree from the Georgia Bankers Association at the University of Georgia in 2001. Steve was owner and operator of Top Dog Car Wash and a former office manager and business partner with Dr. Mark Griffis. He was formerly employed as a supervisor at Goody’s Manufacturing and as a loan officer for the Bank of Eastman. Steve enjoyed hunting, trips to St. George Island and was a huge fan of the band KISS. He was a man of integrity, a fun loving soul, and a protector of his friends and beloved family. Steve was the son of the late Annette Pitts Couey & Bobby Ray Couey.

JUANITA GILLIS
1937 - July 19, 2016

MRS. JUANITA VEAL GILLIS, age 79, of Snellville, GA, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Friday, July 22, at Zion Hope Baptist Church, with Dr. Scott Downing officiating, with interment in Zion Hope Baptist Church Cemetery .

Mrs. Gillis was born on March 22, 1937, in Helena, GA. She was the youngest of twelve children born to the late Thomas Gregory and Lena Allen Veal. She was the granddaughter of the late John N. and Sabra Veal. Mrs. Gillis is survived by her husband, Jerry Gillis and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gillis survived a life-threatening incident at the age of 2 ½ when she accidentally fell into the family’s hog pen. Her brother, Tommy, jumped into the pen, calling for help. Eunice, her sister, was able to pull her to safety, thereby saving her life. She was submerged in cold water to bring her from unconsciousness.

Mrs. Gillis joined Zion Hope Baptist Church in Dodge County at an early age and later transferred her church membership to First Baptist Church of Atlanta.

Mrs. Gillis worked in the medical field for twenty years before opening her own successful real estate business under the names of McDonald Realty, JVM Investment Company, and Gillis Properties. One of Mrs. Gillis’ major accomplishments as a successful realtor was the negotiation and sale of 363,000+ acres of timberland of Continental Can Corporation.

Mrs. Gillis was an active member of the Pilot Club for many years. She served as President of the McRae Pilot Club for two years and President of the Atlanta Pilot Club for one year.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, Mrs. Gillis was preceded in death by seven sisters; Ethelene Veal, Paulene Veal, Elsie Veal Sheppard, Maxine Veal Cravey, Tessie Veal Clark, Eunice Veal Western, and Winnie Veal Dyal; and by four brothers, Eschol Veal, Everette Veal, Hubert Veal and Tommy Veal.

The family will receive friends in Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home from 6:00PM-8:00PM Thursday, July 21. In addition to flowers, the family request contributions to the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L. Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.

He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Danny was son of the late Mabel Harbuck Martin & Joshua Martin and was preceded in death by his Grandson – Jaden Daniel Perry and 2 Brothers – Fortson Martin and Raymond Martin.

He loved cheering for Georgia Bulldogs Football, the Oakland Raiders and the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed watching Nascar and dirt track racing and grilling out with family and friends. He was son of the late Billy Robert Edge and was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather – John Franklin Crabb, Paternal Grandparents – Moena Faulk Edge and Marvin Edge and Uncle – Johnny Crabb.

MR. RONALD EUGENE “RONNIE” MOORE, JR., age 56, of Dublin, GA, died Friday, June 24, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 29, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Dahl McDermitt, Jr. officiating, with interment in Cottondale Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Moore was a native of Eastman, a graduate of Dodge County High School and a Technical School Graduate. He was a former employee of Stuckey’s Inc. and Gilman Paper Company, a former mechanic for Shorty’s Used Cars and enjoyed water skiing and fishing. He was son of the late Carolyn Batts Yawn & Ronald E. “Duck” Moore, Sr. and was preceded in death by his Step-Father – Charles Yawn.

MR. WILLIAM CLARENCE “BILLY” HUMPHREY, III, age 51, of Eastman, GA, died Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

MRS. MAY HIGH RATTRAY TUCKER, age 91, of Eastman, GA, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, June 24, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Joe Daniel officiating, with a private family burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Tucker was a native of Vidalia, GA, a graduate of Toombs County High School, a business school graduate in Anderson, SC, an active member of Eastman First Baptist Church and the Hope Sunday school class. She was a former owner & operator of The Tog Shop and The Country Cottage for many years. She formerly worked in the Dodge County Commissioners office as a secretary. She was also active in Estate Sales for decades. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed antiquing and flea market vending. May was affectionately known as the “Roadrunner” by her family and friends for her affinity for travel and staying active in the antiquing business. May was daughter of the late Georgia May High Rattray & James Malcolm Rattray, widow of John Thomas “Jack” Tucker and was preceded in death by 2 Sisters – Blanche Collins and Nellie Tomlinson, 2 Brothers – Malcolm James Rattray and Jack Maurice Rattray and a Son-in-Law – Jeff Fisher.

Survivors: 2 Daughters – Gail T. Crafton (Wayne) of Chauncey and Jill T. ELSIE DARLING
June 13, 2016

Elsie Sapp Darling, 92, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her family.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue with the Rev. Jim Duggan officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Eastman with Hank Sapp officiating. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will her nephews, Jerry Sapp, Jack Sapp, Dean Sapp, Hank Sapp ,Casey Sapp, Dewey Reams, Larry Reams, Billy Reed, Kenneth Reed and friends, Larry Pope and David Pickard. The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Darling was preceded in death by the love of her life, Lewis K. Darling with whom she held hands for sixty-seven years. She was born in Eastman the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Bertie Gulley Sapp and was a graduate of Chauncey High School. She was a graduate of Georgia/Alabama Business College and was Secretary and Treasurer retired from Croft-Mullins Electric Company. Mrs. Darling was a member of Bellevue Baptist where she served as Sunday School Teacher and a member of WMU. Above all she loved her church family and was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was the sister of the late Joseph A. "Pete" Sapp and Barney J. Sapp.

She is survived by those she loved most, her daughter, Gloria Darling (Patrick) Ryan, her granddaughter, Wendy Darling and nieces and nephews. The family extends their deepest appreciation to Dot Mitchell, Cora Ingram and Pecola Mastergables for their compassionate and gentle care given during these days. We will always be grateful.

MR. BENNY CLIFTON PEACOCK, SR., age 76, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Berrien Nursing Center in Nashville, GA.

He enjoyed gardening, working on appliances, fixing things and socializing with others. He was son of the late Grace Beck Peacock & Oscar Peacock and was preceded in death by a Sister – Betty Thornton.

She was a retired employee of Bellsouth, where she worked for over 30 years, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Pilot Club and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was daughter of the late Cora Inez Wright Powell & A.T. “Shorty” Powell, widow of Alvin Fordham, Sr. and was preceded in death by a Granddaughter – Heather Fordham and Sister – Hettie P. Douglas.

Lesa also enjoyed nature walks and gardening. She was a loving mother, grandmother and dedicated wife and enjoyed walking and working in her yard. She was daughter of the late Myrtice Vaughn Davis & D.J. Davis and was preceded in death by 2 Infant Siblings.

MR. JAMES EDWARD “JIM” HARP, age 92, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, GA.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00PM Tuesday, May 31 at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Pastor Dahl McDermitt Jr. officiating with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

Mr. Harp was born in Thomaston, GA and a graduate of R.E. Lee High School in Upson County. He was a longtime resident of Dodge County, a member of the Eastman First Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army World War II Veteran. He was a retired State of Georgia Fire Marshall, a former Eastman Gas Company employee and an active member of “The Cross” ministry. He enjoyed the game of baseball and was a Pitcher for the Eastman Dodgers Class D Minor League Baseball Team. He is a member of the Georgia Class D Minor League Baseball Hall of Fame. Jim’s 90 lifetime wins are the most in Georgia State League History. He enjoyed cutting grass with his zero turn lawnmower and keeping his yard neat, playing with his dog “Bo” and riding Grands around in his golf cart. He was the son of the late Margaret Louise Hammett Harp and William Alfred Harp and was preceded in death by his Wife of 64 years – Jackie Gordy Harp and 6 Siblings – Gladys Hicks, Dorothy Jones, Robert Harp, Fred Harp, Bryant Harp, and Isabell Meeks.

MRS. EMILY JEAN ALMAND HOLDER , age 77, of Eastman, GA, died Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Serenity Place Hospice in Dublin, GA.

Mrs. Holder was a native of Dodge County and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She and her husband were owner and operator of Holder’s Citgo for 16 years. She enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball and game shows on TV, working word puzzles and caring for her family. She was the daughter of the late Willie Belle Douglas and Julius Day Almand and widow of the late Jimmy Holder, married for 42 years.

Mrs. Martin was a native of Chauncey, of the Baptist Faith and a 26 year retired employee of Southern Bell, where she worked in the engineering department. She was an active volunteer for the Eastman Christian Life Center, daughter of the late Evie Smith Williams & Chas Williams and was preceded in death by a Sister – Cecelia Tolson, Brother – Aubrey “Sprig” Williams and Niece – Shannon Tolson.

MR. ISAAC HORTON, age 73, of Empire, GA, died Sunday, May 15, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Horton was a native of Chester, a member of Middle Ground Baptist Church, a 1961 graduate of Dodge County High School and a graduate of South Georgia Technical College with a degree in Paint and Body. He was a retired salesman for Bumper To Bumper Auto Parts and an avid gardener, who had a green thumb. He enjoyed working in his yard, spending time with his dogs and was a very social person, who never met a stranger. Isaac was son of the late Cora Lee Boswell Horton & James Amos Horton and was preceded in death by 2 Daughters and 3 Sisters – Ruth H. Allen, Martha H. Maddox and Madgeline Horton.

Mrs. Chance was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a retired merchant for E & R Dime Store, Levine’s Department Store, Bearden’s Department Store and Four Points Grocery and was a longtime caretaker for the elderly. She enjoyed giving and doing for others. She was daughter of the late Lula Rogers Hooks and Jesse E. Hooks, widow of Fred A. Chance and was preceded in death by 5 Siblings – Virginia Coleman, Dorothy Daniel, Valerie Hooks, Rev. Ovid Hooks, and J.D. Hooks.

1942 - May 7, 2016

MR. GEORGE LEWIS WINBURN, age 73, of Athens, GA, died Saturday, May 7, 2016, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, May 12, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Stephen Upchurch officiating.

Mr. Winburn was a native of Eastman, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and former co-owner and operator of Winburn Properties in Athens, GA. He was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, son of the late Mary Elizabeth Mullis Winburn & William McClendon “Mack” Winburn and was preceded in death by 2 Brothers – Charles M. Winburn and Gene Mac Winburn.

Survivors: Wife of 45 years – Frances Laura Foster Winburn of Athens; 2 Daughters – Marie Elizabeth Winburn (Stephen Daniel) and Joanna Leigh Winburn both of Athens; 3 Granddaughters – Joni Elizabeth Woods of Athens, Stephanie Daniel and Brihannah Daniel both of Hull, GA; Sister – Patricia Ann W. Dobbins of Mt. Vernon; 2 Sisters-in-Law – Zandra Smith (Tim) of Eastman and Joni Moore (David) of Alamo; Former Son-in-Law – James L. Woods of Athens; 2 Adopted Daughters – Cassie Folsom and Pamela Harris; Several Nieces and Nephews.

DEBORAH “BIG DEB” WILKERSON
1954 - May 8, 2016

MS. DEBORAH JEAN “BIG DEB” WILKERSON, age 61, of Eastman, GA, died Sunday, May 8, 2016 at her residence.

A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the residence of Jeanie Curtis, 698 Hwy #126, Cadwell.

Ms. Wilkerson was born in Fresno, CA, attended Snow Hill Baptist Church in Cadwell and was a homemaker. She loved planting flowers, quilting and her dogs. She was daughter of the late Frankie Jean Jones Wilkerson and Oscar Tommy Wilkerson.

Survivors: 2 Daughters – Bambi Lou White (Randy) of Rincon and Wendy Grey of Kentucky; 3 Sons – David Wilkerson (Rhonda) of Forsyth, Tommy Grey of Atlanta and Calvin Roland of Nevada; 3 Sisters – Patty Wilkerson and Brenda O’Neal both of Eastman and Valerie Gathings of Cadwell; 3 Brothers – Carl Lilly of Saint Mary’s, GA, Tommy Wilkerson of Nashville, TN and Rusty Wilkerson of Augusta; Several Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren; Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends. BUTCH MILNER
1943 - May 6, 2016

MR. PAUL EDWARD “BUTCH” MILNER, age 72, of Eastman, GA, died Friday, May 6, 2016 at Bleckley Memorial Hospital in Cochran.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Sunday, May 8, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Mr. David Currie and Mr. Dennis Giddens officiating, with interment in Orphans Cemetery.

Mr. Milner was a lifelong resident of Eastman, a member of Cottondale Baptist Church, a graduate of Dodge County High School and Middle Georgia College with a degree in Nursing. He was the Manager of the Emergency Room at Fairview Park Hospital for over 25 years, Nursing Home Administrator and Director of Nurses for Heart of Georgia Nursing Home for over 20 years, loved animals, farming and spending time with his grandchildren. He was son of the late Mary Lee Fordham Milner & Paul Simmons Milner and was preceded in death by Twin Grandsons – Cole Milner and Drew Milner.

Survivors: Wife of 51 years – Judy Steele Milner of Eastman; 3 Sons – Blake Milner, MD (Sherry), Bart Milner (Stephanie) and Adam Doss (Marla Gill) all of Eastman; 6 Grandchildren – Charlotte Milner, Wyatt Milner, Lyla Milner, Bo Milner, Jake Milner and Cody Gill; Mother-in-Law – Ruby Haupt Steele of Eastman.

Marion "Pete" Davis Silver
1939 - September 19, 2014

Mrs. Marion Davis Silver, affectionately known as "Pete", died on Friday, September 19, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. Pete was born in RFD DeSoto on February 20, 1939. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Addison Davis, Jr. and Maidee Conley Davis Walker; and by her husband, Stanley Silver.

Pete graduated from Americus High School and Georgia Southwestern College. She was an outstanding student who loved sports and dancing. She was honored as a Superlative in her Senior class. In addition to being a cheerleader at Americus High School, Pete loved playing basketball, both in high school and college. At Georgia Southwestern, Pete was elected co-Captain of the basketball team in 1958 and 1959, and won numerous medals including, All Tournament and Sportsmanship Awards. Pete was also elected a "GSW Favorite" and Sweetheart of Kappa Sigma Phi Fraternity. In 2002, Pete was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Following college, Pete moved to Atlanta and worked as a Reservations Agent for Delta Air Lines; she later moved to New York City where she became a Supervisor in New York Reservations, acted as an Administrative Assistant for the Vice President for Delta and went on to become a Chief Supervisor. Pete traveled extensively to Europe, Asia and The Middle East.

Returning to Americus in 1990, Pete became very involved in community organizations.

She first became a GSW Foundation Board Member, served as Secretary of the GSW Foundation, Finance Committee, Executive Committee, Chairman of Compensation Committee and Sumter County Initiative Board Member. Pete was a member of Habitat for Humanity and worked along with former President, Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter building one of the first homes here in Americus. She was involved with raising funds for the Windsor Hotel, the Rylander Theater and for the construction of the new Americus Hospital following the tornado.

Pete was always very generous and passionate about her family, her friends and her precious pets.

Pete is survived by her brother Joseph Addison (Bubber) Davis, III and his wife, Wyndy of Leesburg; her sister Shirley Davis Mattingly and her husband, Don of Clearwater, FL, son Clifford Silver and daughter Denise Silver Leinhardt, (husband Julian) and children Carli and Samantha, of Boca Raton, Fla. She is survived by many loved nieces and nephews including Ann Marie Hatcher. She is survived by her long-time caregiver, Mary Louise Singleton of Americus who was very special to Pete.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, September. 22, 2014, at Aldridge Funeral Services, 612 Rees Park, Americus, GA at 6:00pm.

In lieu to flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice P.O. Box 1434 Americus, Ga. 31709. Burial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus. The Hilliard Brothers, from Rhine, GA, are musicians for the funeral service.

MR. WARREN EDWARD SOUTHERLAND, JR., Age 59, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00PM Friday, January 13 from the graveside in Orphans Cemetery, with Dr. Jerry Peele and Rev. Charles Robinson officiating.

Warren was a lifelong resident of Dodge County, a member of Eastman First Baptist Church and Owner & Operator of Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home. He was a member of the Eastman Lions Club, Georgia Funeral Directors Association and Member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Trust. He was preceded in death by his Father - Warren E. Southerland, Sr.

Survivors: Wife – Joy Jones Southerland; 3 Sons – Warren E. “Wes” Southerland III, Wil C. Southerland (Brandy) & Gant W. Southerland (Susan); 3 Grandchildren – Caroline Southerland, Sydney Southerland & Briana Southerland; Mother – Pearl Belflower Southerland; Sister – Ann S. Peacock (James); Mother-in-Law – Joyce B. Jones; Sister-in-Law – Rhonda Dwozan (Freddie); Aunt – Berta Mae Belflower Wright; 6 Nieces – Shelli Goodman (Tony), Abby Peacock, Tracy Harrell, Joni Coleman (Tracy), Marci McCranie (Brian), Krista Rainey (Chip) and Several Cousins.
